Historic Tours of Parker Mill

Sundays throughout September and October from 1:00-5:00 p.m. families can get a free tour of the Parker Grist Mill (4650 Geddes Rd, Ann Arbor). Parker Mill is one of a few remaining pioneer grist mills still operational in southeastern Michigan.  Come and learn how the Parker family used water power to grind corn and wheat, turn a lathe and run other machines in their mill.  Your family can stop by anytime to visit, but a more formal detailed tour will begin at 3:00 for interested visitors.

My children have been there many times. In fact when we stopped by the other day after making our cider, they knew so much that they could almost lead the tour themselves. Oddly enough they continue to enjoy the wonders of watching the grist mill operate!

Bring along your camera too for photo ops. Parker Mill is one of the nicest natural places to take family photos too!!!

Fall Fun Fair and Wild West Fest

On Saturday, October 7th & 14th from 10:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. families can enjoy the Fall Fun Fair at Northfolk Farms and Outback. Experience ​a hayride to the Native American village, western games, horse and pony rides and an exciting exotic animal petting farm. Feed fish in the pond, ride the train eat donuts or try your hand at a sling shot shooting apples into an open field.

​No reservations are needed, payment can be made at the gate. The cost is ​$15.00/child and $4.00/adult but be sure to bring your quarters for the feed machines. With admission, kids will get a free pie pumpkin and decorations.

Pioneer Days at the Waterloo Farm Museum

On Sunday, October 8, noon-5:00 p.m. at the Waterloo Farm Museum (13493 Waterloo Munith Rd, Waterloo, MI) families can celebrate late 19th century farm life! This event includes tours of the Farm Museum and Dewey School, live music, and demonstrations of crafts, trades, and traditional cooking methods. Admission to the Waterloo Farm Museum grounds for this event is $5 for adults and $2 for children aged 5-12, free admission is granted for children under 5 and members of the Waterloo Area Historical Society.

Now in its fifth decade, Pioneer Day at the Waterloo Farm Museum is the premier event on the Waterloo Area Historical Society's calendar. A visit to the Farm Museum and tour includes a complex of farm buildings including the restored ten-room Farmhouse dating from 1855. In the Farmhouse kitchen you will be greeted by the delicious smells of Sunday dinner being readied for the dining room table. A docent in every room will be your guide as you tour the house set with utensils, furniture, clothing, and other household items of the time.

I know my kids especially enjoy the demonstrations of butter making in the Spring House, hearth cooking in the Log House, brick-oven baking in the Bake House, and blacksmithing in the workshop.

Cider Mills, Apple Orchards and Pumpkin Patches in Washtenaw County

The unseasonably cool weather this week has got me thinking...

Next week school is back in session, football season is just around the corner, the days are getting shorter and the nights have begun to cool ever so slightly. These subtle changes indicate that it's time for cider, donuts, and visiting area apple orchards! Fall is one of my favorite times of the year, and visiting the many great apple orchards and cider mills is the highlight of the season. In the interest of shopping locally however, I have compiled a list of cider mills, pumpkin patches and apple orchards in Washtenaw County that I have visited and like to visit. Be sure to add additional locations in the comments below!

Belleville


1 DeBuck's Corn Maze and Pumpkin Patch (50240 Martz Rd., Belleville, MI 48111): Enjoy the kids are as well as go carts, hay slide, a pumpkin patch, and corn maze highlighting Frozen.

5 Dexter Cider Mill (3685 Central St., Dexter MI 48130): The Dexter Cider Mill is the oldest operating cider mill in Michigan. Families can find natural cider, fresh apples, doughnuts, caramel apples and bakery goods in addition to seasonally available locally grown vegetables and apple products. Families can also enjoy slushies, and popcorn. Open mid-August. Cost: Admission and parking are free.

Manchester

7 Alber Orchard & Cider Mill plus corn maze (13011 Bethel Church Rd., Manchester MI 48158): Families enjoy a family owned orchard that has been in business since 1890. View an old fashioned cider press, pick pumpkins, enjoy the fresh cider, wander the corn maze or take a hay ride. Open Labor day through November 7. School tours are $5.00 per child or parent, corn maze admission $5+. Many free events at the orchard throughout the season.

Events Round-up: Ann Arbor Halloween & More

Sing it with me now "I want candy!" OK maybe not, but that is the general tune of my household right now. Halloween is just around the corner and there are so many great events and activities.  With so much happening throughout the week, it's worth a stand alone blog post.

Are you ready for Halloween? I'm just hoping Ann Arbor doesn't have snow, specifically because we're headed to the Greenfield Village Hallow'een, The BSA's HauntedWoods at Camp Munhacke and HalloWeekends at Cedar Point!(Want to win tickets to Halloweends?) And that's in addition to so many other activities and Ann Arbor events!

So find all of the Halloween events, activities, and haunts you desire in Ann Arbor, in addition to other fun events happening over the next few days. The Ann Arbor Mom will always have ideas whether you are in and around Ann Arbor with kids or living nearby. Want more ideas? Kids in Gr K-5 will enjoy this free event where they will make Mini Yarn Monsters at the AADL (Mallets Creek) 2:00-3:00 p.m. Learn a few tricks to turn yarn into a fun monster you can call your own! For those outdoorsy types, consider instead going to the Trick or Treat on the Huron River program happening from noon-5:00 p.m.

This appears to be the "Big" Halloween event day in the area. Everything from ice skating to crafts to events around An Arbor. Start the day at the Ypsilanti District Library (YDL) where the youngest family members will enjoy Boo! Happy Halloween Storytime! at the Michigan branch at 3:30 p.m. or at 11:00 a.m. hear some not-so-scary stories, sing some Halloween songs and create a simple craft at the AADL.

Want to do some fun Halloween crafts? At 1:00 p.m. create a Spooky Monster Banner at the AADL (Mallets Creek) or bring your child (Ages 3+) to drop into your local Michael's Crafts from 10:00 a.m. - noon for a $2 Halloween Make-and-take program. Teens also have a special crafting event starting at 1:00 p.m. at the AADL (Pittsfield Branch as they create unique Mini-Monster Stuffies. Teens and adults will work with local crafter Beth Battey, to make their creations during this free teen teen event, all supplies provided. This is an intricate project that will require the entire time and patience to complete. Gr 6+

Get out there and get active before eating all the sweets during the Halloween Skate at Veterans Memorial Park - Indoor ice arena at 1:00-2:30 p.m.  General admission rates apply as you skate to the spooky sounds of Halloween. Best costume prizes awarded. Fun for all ages.

There are two chances to participate in Trunk or Treat today. There is Trunk or Treat at (YDL -Superior) at 5:00 p.m. or Trunk or Treat with the Ann Arbor Jaycees, 3:00-5:00 p.m.

Your wee ones will also appreciate Boo Bash at Briarwood Mall from 5:00-8:00 p.m. For the first hour, kids can trick-or-treat with participating retailers throughout the mall in a safe, climate-controlled environment. There will also be fun activities throughout the evening, including appearances from Colors the Clown and Leonard the Lion, a chocolate drop station from The Melting Pot, and an obstacle course from Gym America. Students from the University of Michigan Dental School will dress in costumes and teach kids about proper dental care. Even The Parade Company will be represented, thanks to Art Van Furniture, which is hosting Clownie and providing reflective Halloween treat bags for families. Noerr, the mall's photo provider, will also be available for those frightfully fantastic family photos this year.

If it is music you would rather enjoy, then consider instead the EMU Orchestra Halloween Concert  at 7:30 p.m. at Pease Auditorium.  For an evening of family fun, join the EMU Symphony Orchestra for their annual Halloween Concert. Children of all ages are encouraged to wear Costumes! Admission: $10 Adults $8 Students or Seniors $6 Youth under 12

Sunday, October 26:

Of course there is always the iconic Family Halloween Party at the U-M Museum of Natural History Museum noon - 5:00 p.m. My children loved this party when we went a few years ago. It is a crazy day but well worth spending time there! Discover special stations and displays full of hands-on activities, live animals, and more! This is a free party and no reservations or tickets are necessary. The party is suitable for all ages. Don't forget to bring your goody bag! For more information, call (734) 764-0480.

What about another option for Trunk or Treat at YDL? It's happening at 5:00 p.m. at the Whittaker Road Branch.

Close out the weekend by enjoying the Music of the Night during the University of Michigan Halloween Concert at 4:30 p.m.

Tuesday, October 28:

The Dexter District Library is hosting a special Halloween Movie Showing of “The Mummy” at 1:00 p.m. With incredible special effects and classic suspense come follow two explorers, (Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz) as they search for long lost treasure and break a 3,000-year-old curse. Come re-discover this extraordinary classic story. Rated: PG-13, 125 minutes.

There are also several opportunities for pre-school Halloween Parties with a storytime event held at at the Saline District Library at 10:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. and a K-1 Halloween Fun at 4:15 p.m. at the  Saline Rec Center. Later in the day kids can enjoy the Harry Potter Party at the Saline District Library 4:15 p.m.

Want to help with the decorating? Teens can help out by making a Halloween Wreath at 7:00 p.m. at the AADL Pittsfield Branch. This event is intended for grade 6 to adult Get in the spooky spirit making a Halloween-themed wreath!

Wednesday, October 29:

Teens shouldn't miss out on the Teen Halloween Party with a Tarot Card Reader at YDL (Michigan) 7:00 p.m. or making Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) Charms at 7:00 p.m. at AADL (Malletts Creek Branch). Both programs are free teen events.

Thursday, October 30:

Enjoy the Harry Potter Party at the Saline District Library 4:15 p.m. or head to the annual Downtown Halloween Fall Festival at Ypsilanti District Library starting at 5:00 p.m. The event (always a yearly favorite!) allows kids to wander downtown Ypsilanti for tricks or treats followed by a quick craft and free activities at the Ypsilanti District Library. Don't forget to stop by the "Boo" Mobile and get your free popcorn, candy!

Need a break and some exercise before the big day? Then the Halloween Yoga Party at Peachy Fitness 6:30 p.m. is the way to go.

Friday, October 31:

Teens can have their own party at the Teen Night Halloween Spooktacular 8:00 p.m. - midnight.

For the rest of the family, try trick or treating during the Halloween Family Bash at Meri Lou Murray Recreation Center at 6:00-8:30 p.m.

Huron River Trick or Treat by Canoe

Enjoy the Huron River Trick or Treat event October 16, just
don't let the pirates get your booty!

Although I have mentioned this even in my Halloween Events Round-up, it certainly sounds like a fun event for the whole family... So I thought to pass it along in greater detail.

On October 19, take your entire family on a trip down the river during the annual Huron River trick or Treat event. Starting at the Gallup Canoe Livery anytime between noon and 5:00 p.m. families can spend the afternoon enjoying the haunting fall beauty of the Huron River by canoe or kayak. As you paddle down the river families will encounter creatures, ghouls and goblins (although they don't look very scary) handing out treats and candy. Feel free to dress up in costumes or come as is, just be sure to bring a bag for your candy and keep an eye out for the swashbuckling pirates as they patrol the waters! You wouldn't want them to grab the booty you collected!

The fee for this Ann Arbor Halloween event is $22/boat, children need to be 1 for the boat-ride. Really it's no trick, but will certainly be a treat!

Weekend Event Round-up: Sept 6-8

Hello Ann Arbor families - It's going to be a beautiful weekend! I can't wait to get out there. I'm hoping the weather allows for some outdoor play, perhaps even a bike ride or hike! I'll certainly be foraging a bit and preserving some of the goods from my garden, however with the weather we are supposed to have, who wants to be tied to the kitchen? I want to find a great activity for my kids to enjoy. What about you? Do you have any activities or events in mind this weekend in Ann Arbor with the kids?

Friday, September 6:

• Tonight spend a Fun Friday Night At the UM Natural History Museum (1109 Geddes Ave.Ann Arbor). From 5:30-9:00 p.m. families can wander the museum, participate in fun hands-on activities, see the dinosaurs, take guided tours, participate storytime and watch a planetarium show (for $3).

Saturday, September 7:

• Get outside and explore - Perhaps a trip to play disc golf at Rolling Hills, the end of summer hike at Hudson Mills (Hudson Mills Metropark Activity Center) at 8:00-11:00 a.m., or even a tree hike with Washtenaw County Parks & Recreation! Families wanting to know more about trees should plan to attend the Burns-Stokes Trees of Washtenaw County program held at Park Lyndon at 10:00 a.m.-noon. (This would make an exceptional scout event too!) The kids will learn about many of the tree species found in our part of Michigan. Pre-register at 971-6337 x334 or stonerf@ewashtenaw.org.
• What about a free movie to start the weekend? This weekend's free movie at the Quality 16 is epic. Catch it at 9:00 a.m. OR 10:00 a.m.
• Your preschooler might really enjoy storytime so be sure to check out the new Saturday stroytime at the Ann Arbor Hand's On Museum at 10:30 a.m.
• Want to learn about one of natures most important insects? Then the Festival of the Honey Bee at YDL-Michigan is the place to bee. From 1:00-5:00 p.m. create bee-related crafts, taste honey, do the waggle dance, and learn about pollination and the bee life-cycle. There is even an open-mic performance time for bee-related songs, poetry and essays. 
• Take your wee scientist to the Ann Arbor Hands On Museum for Sciencefest for hands-on activities from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. there is even a special pre-school month playtime for the tots happening. Experience even more science fun at the University of Michigan Museum of Natural History with the hands-on program "Life: How Do We Find It?" at 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. and of course don't forget the free dinosaur tours at 2:00 p.m.
• Teach the kids more about where their food comes from at the Sixth Annual HomeGrown Festival. It happens at the Ann Arbor Farmers Market (315 Detroit St, Ann Arbor) from 6:00-10:00 p.m.

Sunday, September 8:

• You have a second chance to catch the free movie epic at the Quality 16 at 9:00 a.m. OR 10:00 a.m. 
• There is also a second chance for the ScienceFest preschool playtime today from noon-4:00 p.m.
• Storytime is at the Kerrytown Bookfest at 3:00 p.m.
• There are two fun fall activities happening at historic locations. Families could head over to Sharon Mills (5701 Sharon Hollow Rd, Manchester) for an open house at 1:00-4:00 p.m.to participate in a docent guided tour to learn about the mill and its hydroelectric generator. Want to stay closer to Ann Arbor? Then plan to tour an 1870's pioneer grist mill at Parker Mill (4650 Geddes Rd, Ann Arbor). Families will learn how water power was used to grind corn and wheat. Formal tours are given at 2:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. 
• Don't forget the science fun happening at the University of Michigan Museum of Natural History with the hands-on program "Life: How Do We Find It?" at 3:00 p.m. and free dinosaur tours at 2:00 p.m.
• I posted the other day about the Dawn Farm Jamboree. It's a great way to support a local Ypsilanti cause while spending a fun day out with the kids.

Exploring the Sharon Short Hills Preserve

Fall back with your clocks, but don't forget to head out for a wonderful fall hike exploring the Sharon Short Hills natural area at Sharon Short Hills Preserve on Sunday November 6, 2:00-4:00 p.m. Explore the wetlands and forested hills with a naturalist from Washtenaw County Parks and Recreation seeing some late fall colors, woodland creatures and maybe even a bird or two. This is a free event for the whole family!

All Aboard for Fall Color Tours Aboard the Southern Michigan Railroad

tours are a popular excursion for families.

On Saturdays, October 15 until Sunday, October 30 families can hop aboard the Southern Michigan Railroad  (806 S. Evans St., Tecumseh) for the sights, colors and taste of fall. Travel into the countryside for a first hand look at the changing colors and season during one of the annual "Fall Color Tour" trips start starting today and on any Thursday, Friday, Saturday, or Sunday through October 30.

Reservations are requested for the popular 2+ hour train excursions that leave Tecumseh at 11:00 a.m. or 1:30 p.m. Thursday-Sunday, with an extra 4:00 p.m. train ride on Saturdays and Sundays. For an added bonus, families can enjoy a countryside stopover for complimentary cider and donuts!  

Tickets are $15 per adult, with seniors 65 years and older at $12, or children ages 2-12 years reduced to $9. Payment is in the form of cash or check only and will be collected by the ticket agent on the caboose at the train yard. For more information call 517.456.7677.     

Weekend Events Round-up: October 14-16

Whether you are taking a leisurely fall color  drive or attending one of
the many storytime events in Ann Arbor, there  is always plenty to do!

How is your calendar shaping up for the month? For us it seems like the next two weekends are chocked FULL of events, activities, sports or Halloween parties! can't a girl get a break?! Of course I can, when it snows!!! I just don't want snow in October.

Regardless there's not much that will stop us from attending all that Ann Arbor has to offer, we'll squeeze it in somehow. So check out the many activities that are happening in Ann Arbor for kids this weekend.


Friday, October 14:

• Kinderconcert at the Ann Arbor District Library (343 S. Fifth Ave., Ann Arbor) at 9:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. where the little ones will be learning about the viola and piano. Dance and hear stories all under the guise of educational enrichment for the preschool set!  
• The teen gathering at the Ypsilanti District Library (229 W. Michigan Ave., Ypsilanti) is a great way to kick back, play some games and meet some new friends. From 6:0-8:30 p.m., teens in grades 6-12 can stop by to play Wii, Playstation II, board games, Magic, and Yu-Gi-Oh or watch anime and movies.  

Saturday, October 15:

• Take a trip down the tracks at the Southern Michigan Railroad during their annual Fall Color Tours starting today through October 30. More details posted shortly!
• Free fall movies at the Quality 16 at 9:00 and 10:00 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, this week is Mr. Popper's Penguins.
• Free Kinderconcert at the Dexter District Library (3255 Alpine St., Dexter) for ages 6 and under at 10:00 a.m.
• At 11:00 a.m. or 3:00 p.m., stop by the University of Michigan Exhibit Museum of Natural History (1109 Geddes Ave., Ann Arbor) for a free 20-minute interactive demonstration exploring how fossils are created. This short program offers something for all ages – exciting information about fossils and fun, hands-on exploration of fossils.
• Today is the start of the Performance Network Series for Young Audiences. At 1:00 p.m. kids ages pre-K through 6th grade can check out a performance of the “The Fisherman and His Wife” a musical based on the fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm.
• Paper Bag Trees, Gargoyles and Salt Ghosts at the Ypsilanti District Library - October 15, 2:00-4:00 p.m.
• Kids, strike a pose in a trick photo and get copies of your photos to take home with you during the Trick Photography session at the Ypsilanti District Library (8975 MacArthur Blvd., Superior Township) 2:00-3:30 p.m.

• The other day I wrote about several harvest celebrations happening in Ypsilanti's Depot Town (noon-5:00 p.m.) or at Parker Mill (1:00-5:00 p.m.) for families interested in a little history or hands-on activities!
• Not Just for Kids series: 'Tales as Tall as the Sky' at Michigan Theater (603 E. Liberty St., Ann Arbor) at 1:30 p.m. Enjoy a tall-tale that encourages interest in books and reading. Tickets start at $9/show.
• Bring the entire family to dance at Pittsfield Grange (3337 Ann Arbor-Saline Rd, Ann Arbor). Enjoy live music by David West and Donna Baird, followed by light refreshments. 2:00-4:00 p.m. Tickets are $12 for the family.

Harvest Celebrations Around Town This Weekend

This weekend there are a couple note-worthy free events that celebrate the harvest season. that are appropriate for the entire family.

On Sunday, October 16, from 1:00-5:00 p.m., families can experience a harvest at Parker Mill (4650 Geddes Rd., Ann Arbor). Learn about how the grist operated or even try your hand at shelling corn. Families will also learn about wild nut harvesting and be able to taste several varieties of apples. Guided tours are given at 2:00 and 3:00 p.m. Pack a picnic and enjoy the event, then walk a few of the trails for a beautiful afternoon of education, celebration and enjoyment!

Ypsilanti's Harvest Festival is sure to
provide plenty of free entertainment
for the entire family. 

For another take on harvest-time fun, Ypsilanti's Depot Town (E. Cross St. and N. River St., Ypsilanti) is also playing host to a Harvest Festival from noon-5:00 p.m.

Families can revisit the past in historic depot town while enjoying a flea market, live entertainment, pumpkin carving, kids entertainment and Tow Mater from Cars!

Halloween Spooktacular at Matthaei Botanical Gardens

Dress up in your best costume and have a scary good time at the Halloween Spooktacular at Matthaei Boatical Gardens, October 22, 10:00 a.m. - noon! Paint pumpkins and gourds, scoop out pumpkins for pumpkin seed treats, make paper masks and decorations, and finish up with cookies and roasted pumpkin seeds!

Pioneer Day at Waterloo Farm Museum

Take your family to celebrate life on a 19th century farm with farm tours, live music, and demonstrations of crafts, trades, and traditional cooking methods of the past during  the Waterloo Historical Society Farm Day. On Sunday, October 9 from noon-5:00 p.m. at the Waterloo Farm Museum and the Dewey School Museum (13493 Waterloo Munith Rd., Grass Lake) families will be treated to demonstrations that will bring history alive!

• Demonstrations of traditional tasks like spinning, dressmaking, weaving and quilting,
• Exhibits of farm tools used for chores such as corn husking and shelling, cider pressing, and sauerkraut making.
• See how the family lived while smelling the preparations of Sunday dinner.
• Try out stilt-walking or other outdoor games.
• Musicians playing
• Horse-drawn wagon rides
• Craftspeople demonstrating and selling their wares
• Farm goods, jams, preserves, apple butter and delicious snacks and treats for sale

Think all of that will make you hungry? Don't worry, mom and dad can treat the kids to a farm cooked treat savoring some Waterloo Bean Soup! So whether your taste runs to primitive folk art, woven goods, or wildlife art, you'll find demonstrators with their wares for sale for gift giving or receiving.

Event admission is $5/adults and $2/children aged 5-12, children 5 and under receive free event admission.

Nightfall Festival at the Toledo Botanical Gardens

What grows in the garden after dark? Is it spooky jack-o-lanterns or happy scarecrows? Find out during the Nightfall Festival at the Toledo Botanical Gardens (5403 Elmer Dr., Toledo OH 43615).

Just 30 minutes south, the Toledo Botanical Gardens is having a fun family-friendly celebration of autumn in the gardens with kids trick-or-treating, activities for the kids including art projects and games, a walking tour by lantern a spooky pumpkin patch, live music and good eats. So if your family is looking for a way to begin October, consider heading south for the evening.

The event runs September 30 and October 1 from 4:00-10:00 p.m. Tickets are $7/adults, $6/seniors and students with children under 12 receiving free admission.

Family-Friendly Hallowen Fun With The Huron-Clinton Metroparks:

Detroit Zoo Fall Festival

On October 1-2, the Detroit Zoo will be celebrating the change of seasons with their annual Fall Festival. The two-day free festival features live entertainment, children’s activities, hayrides and seasonal food. All activities take place in the Main Picnic Grove from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and happen rain or shine. Entrance to the Fall Festival is free with regular Zoo admission although there are additional fees for the children’s activity areas and hayrides.

Apple Day at the Grange

Do you like the tart sweetness of freshly squeezed apple cider? Do you live for do-it-yourself projects? Then this weekend will satisfy both requirements as it's Apple Day at the Grange!

On Saturday, September 24 from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., families can make their own apple cider, taste different apples, and even try applesauce and apple butter for FREE! This Sunday, October 17 from 1:00-4:00 pm families can stop by Parker Mill for their annual Harvest Celebration. Have you ever wanted to learn about pressing your own apple cider? What about gathering nuts of shelling corn? Find out what the residents of Washtenaw County did in eons past adding family fun activities like kids crafts, snacks, and so much more! And if that isn't reason enough to stop by, the mill is in a beautiful, picturesque setting where the kids can wander and play! We love going there to walk the paths and check out the beauty of the area.
