Arrows Away Program: Free Event

Many of you know that I am an avid fan of "free events." That's really why the blog started! I am also an avid scouter and enjoy taking the kids outdoors. We do have our own archery equipment but don't use it often enough, and that's one reason to share this fantastic FREE event.

The Arrows Away program is a free program at the Waterloo State Recreation area (and other state lands) that teaches the traditional outdoor skill of Archery through fun, safe instruction. All equipment and instruction is provided for kids ages 8 and up. I have attended several sessions with my children and have even taken scouting groups out there! To make the date even longer, we hiked some as well as explored the Eddy Discovery Center!

Dates for the program vary throughout the summer and all programs are at the Eddy Discovery Center. Be sure to check their weekly listing for this wonderful program!

Visiting the Sugarbush: Maple Syrup Events for the Family

I love real maple syrup. It's yummy on pancakes and waffles and even used as an ice cream topping! I even love making homemade maple syrup with the family, it's easy to do and yields wonderful results. If you don't want to make your own though, in Washtenaw County and close to Ann Arbor, there are several places where families can go to learn about maple syrup, it's history and how to make your own maple syrup!

March 23: Visit Belleville for Maple Sugaring Through the Ages (10:00 a.m., 2:00 p.m.) at the
Oakwoods Metropark Nature Center (17845 Savage Road, Belleville, MI 48111). Learn about the methods used to collect maple sap and how the maple tree sustained early Americans. Preregister at (734) 782-3956.

Starting February 24 on weekends at the  Hudson Mills Activity Center (8801 N. Territorial Rd., Dexter) families can Journey to the Sugar Bush on a guided tour traveling back in time to experience how maple syrup has been made over the years. While you are there, enjoy an all you can eat pancake and sausage breakfast served from 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. The guided tour (10:00, 11:00 a.m. and noon and by appointment) is $5/Adult or $3/Children  Breakfast (additional):  $6/Adults or $4/Children.  Please pre-register at (734) 426-8211

Starting February 23, Arbor families can take a short drive to visit learn "Maples Sweet Story" at Kensington Metropark (2240 W. Buno Rd., Milford). Tours are given every half hour from noon until 3:00 p.m. where families can learn about maple sugaring. Stop in for a hot breakfast from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Farmhouse Grille, and then head on a guided tour to the sugar bush to see the maple sugaring process, including tapping trees and boiling down the sap. You might even see some Native American re-enactors telling the tale of the sugarbush!  For more information call 800-477-3178800-477-3178. A Metroparks vehicle entry permit is required to enter any Metropark in addition to a small fee of $3/adults and $1/seniors and children 3 to 12 years; kids under 3 are free.

Geocaching 101

On Saturday, May 14, experience Geocaching 101 at the Eddy Discovery Center  (17030 Bush Rd., Chelsea | (734)475-3170). Families will learn the basics of this popular past-time at one of three instructional sessions (11:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m., and 1:00 p.m.) Learn to use a GPS unit (or bring your own) and have fun hunting for prizes. Instructions and clues for the hunt will be available inside the Discovery Center with GPS coordinates provided. Just show up for this fun and free event!

Rockhounding Basics

Fun family event: Rockhounding 101 at the Eddy Discovery Center.

My children and I have really gotten into rock-hounding the past few years. So much so, that on any given beach you will find rocks in our pockets, in backpacks, wrapped in blankets and sometimes in our shoes! The goal is now to find the BEST rock of a specific kind. 

I have actually found a lot pleasure in collecting specimens and learning to identify them. Gliding my fingers across their rough surface or enjoying the cool smoothness. It is soothing and exhilarating.  I have gotten so good in fact that I now am a merit badge counselor for Boy Scouts and have several presentations that I have delivered to the school my children attend (sometimes not even to their classes!). It's a hobby I have really enjoyed and my son's principal has actually asked me to submit to be a substitute teacher after seeing one of the presentations. 

Certainly I have had this love since I was a small child. My grandpa had a huge rock tumbler in his basement and I will forever remember him showing me rocks fresh from the tumbler. My love of rocks was rekindled though when my kids and I attended a free event at the Eddy Discovery Center.

The next Rockhound Basics course will be held on Sunday, May 22, at 2:00 p.m. Families will discover what you can learn about ancient Michigan from looking at a rock, walk along the rock walk at the Eddy Discovery Center ( 17030 Bush Rd., Chelsea, MI 48118) and get to pick the brain of area geologist Larry Bean. You will even learn how to “read” the story told by rocks and help you to identify specimens at a local quarry. 

Meet at the Discovery Center before driving to the quarry to do some collecting. Advance registration is requested at 734-475-3170. Cost: $2 per person/$5 per family. 

Sketching Nature for the Family

On Sunday, May 15 at 2:00 p.m., families who enjoy drawing will have the opportunity to develop their hidden artistic talent sketching nature at the Eddy Discovery Center (17030 Bush Rd., Chelsea, MI 48118). Participants will meet with scientific illustrator Jen Koppin, who will teach drawing techniques and observational skills. The class will then head outdoors to practice sketching and color exercises.

The cost for this event includes entry into the State Park and is $2/person or $5/family plus an additional $2 materials fee for supplies (unless you bring your own). Advance registration for this program is required at 734-475-3170.

Chelsea Community Fair

I still feel the loss of the Michigan State Fair, I miss the barns upon barns of animals and agricultural displays. Not to mention the fun fair food, games, music and family-friendly atmosphere. Next week though we can take in the Chelsea Community Fair (20501 W Old US Highway 12, Chelsea) August 25-29, 2015!

Expect traditional displays such as the Nature's Creation of Life display, the many animals, as well contests, the demolition derby, tractor pulling and many horse shows! After my foray into home wine brewing, I'm looking forward to checking out the homemade wine contest as well as the tables upon tables of home canned and baked goods on display. New this year is a cool ice cream truck, a lumberjack show, draft horse pull and square dancing. Be sure to check out the full schedule of events at the Chelsea Fair before heading out though!

Admission prices for the event are $7.00 with free admission for kids under age 10. In addition to the daily admission fee, your family might opt to enjoy the midway and rides for $20.00.

National Trail Day

This is the perfect time of the year to get outdoors. Everyone can benefit from the fresh air - Mom, Dad AND the kids. So why not take advantage of National Trail Day?

On Saturday, June 6, 2015 there are plenty of opportunities to participate in organized hikes locally. I will be hiking as part of the Iron Belle Trail dedication hike where 130 Scout Troops throughout the state will hike from Belle Isle to Ironwood in a single day. Of course my group only has 5.5 miles of that! Don't let that scare you though. Your hike can be as short or long as you like!

There are two local organized hikes that Washtenaw County Parks and Recreation are leading. The first begins at 10:00 a.m. and ends at 1:00 p.m. at the Leonard Preserve  (N Union St, Manchester, MI 48158) and the second runs 2:00-4:00 p.m. at the Squires Preserve (Sylvan Rd, Chelsea, MI 48118). All ages are welcome to participate. Bring a snack, water or lunch and dress appropriately.  


If you are not able to walk tomorrow, on Sunday there is another 1-mile family friendly walk too. The Family Adventure Walk is a free event from 10:00 a.m.-noon  at Lily Park (Ellsworth and Platt). Enjoy activities sponsored by the Leslie Science Center, and Ann Arbor Hands On Museum as well as find food, fun and t-shirts! It's all about getting outdoors this weekend.

Spring Campfire Programs for the Family: Free Events

There are a couple fun campfire programs I wanted to share with readers. The nice weather makes being outside special, especially at night. My family enjoys listening to the birds, frog choruses and nature awakening. Wouldn't you like to breath the fresh spring air too?

The first event, “Winter or Spring?” is a night hike and campfire program with Washtenaw County Parks & Recreation. On Saturday, March 21 at 7:30 p.m. at Park Lyndon (North Lot - 18801 N Territorial Rd, Chelsea, MI 48118), Faye Stoner will guide families on a brief hike the trail to the wetlands and back. Families will talk about seasonal changes, listen for night sounds, learn about frogs and owls and other night animals, and look for early spring stars! At the conclusion of the hike, enjoy light snacks and hot drinks around the fire.

The following weekend, families can join in on "Fireside Fun" at the Leslie Science & Nature Center (1831 Traver Road Ann Arbor, Michigan 48105). The old-fashioned campfire circle is set up on Sunday, March 29 at 6:30 p.m. Families are sure to be reminded that there's nothing more relaxing as sitting around a campfire roasting marshmallows and swapping stories. Families will need to bring camp chairs, and s'mores fixings - the LSNC staff will provide a blazing outdoor campfire and plenty of marshmallows.

Both of these programs are free events and perfect for the entire family.

Hike at the Eddy Discovery Center This Saturday

Explore the Eddy Discovery Center (17030 Bush Rd., Chelsea, MI 48118) trails during the Harbinger Hike on Saturday March 29, 2:00-3:30 p.m. It would be an excellent way for the kids to find early signs of spring. Who knows you may even see  animal awakenings, early sprouts, and perhaps a few unorthodox blooms during this free event!

Live From Australia: A Creature Conservancy Program

On Sunday, March 30, 2:00-3:00 p.m. families will enjoy visiting Australia (without the long flight) as The Creature Conservancy visits the Gerald Eddy Discovery Center. The Creature Conservancy will be bringing live animals from “down under,” including a kangaroo, a wallaby and a kookaburra. Families will have an opportunity to view these seldom-seen animals up close and learn about their habits and habitats.

Lego Holiday Break Programs for Bored Children

Are you counting the hours until your child returns to school after the holiday break. I have seen a few comments to that from friends on Facebook so I know it's not uncommon. Earlier this week I posted ideas holiday break activities, so consider this idea from Bricks for Kids an extension of that!

If your little guy or gal has a love of all things Legos and is itching for something to do, consider the Mining & Crafting Lego Mini Camp in Chelsea (Thursday-Saturday) or Ninjago & Speedorz Lego Mini Camp in Dexter (Friday).

Your child will have action-packed activities building models, creating mosaic pictures or creating crafts which can be taken home. Weekend Events Round-Up: June 21-23

In my opinion it's been Pure Michigan weather this week. My kids have enjoyed their first full week out of school, they participated in a fun scouting activity and have gotten to enjoy the free Splash program at the YMCA. I was looking forward to a relaxing weekend until I realized it was the weekend for the Great American Backyard Campout. 

Not familiar with the campout or local camping opportunities? There are many inexpensive family camping options. If you have not reserved anything locally, you might consider  attending the Great American Backyard Campout 2013 at Island Lake Recreation Area (12950 Grand River Rd., Brighton) for many free activities. A Recreation Passport is required for vehicles entering the park. First time campers who want to try their hand at tenting are invited to camp at Island Lake at their rustic site camping (vault toilets, a pump for water and no electricity) while enjoying the park and camaraderie with their fellow campers. Free activities will take place throughout the day including tug-o-war, softball, crafts and games, fishing, a night hike, bonfire, s’mores and storytelling. Canoeing is available for a small fee.The entire event is FREE (except canoeing and the vehicle entry fee), however you must contact the park office at 810-229-7067 to reserve your campsite!

If that doesn't work, put the tent up in your back yard and enjoy the evening with your kids! That's what we'll be doing!!!  Besides that we'll be making a few jams and jellies with some Saskatoons we foraged this week, as well as baking some rhubarb bread. Strawberry picking might be in the plans too, depending on what's available at Rowe's.

This free event is geared for teens and pre-teens (grades 4-12). Bring your jump rope and and rhymes and be ready for a jumpin’ good time! Learn how to do Chinese jump rope, Double-Dutch and standard jump rope techniques. Special guests for the event are the St. Francis Heartbeats to demonstrate their skills. This is a rain or shine event.

8:00-11:00 p.m. Celebrate the longest day of the year canoeing the Huron River during Summer Solstice on Gallup Pond (Gallup Canoe Livery, 3000 Fuller Rd., Ann Arbor). For only $18/canoe or two-person kayak; $14/one-person kayak paddle the breathtaking 2.5 mile Gallup Pond, be sure to bring a flashlight and bug-spray though. No preregistration is required.

Weekend Events Round-up: May 31-June 2

This weekend offers Ann Arbor area families several fun opportunities with two local festivals. The first, a family carnival at the Burning Bush Church (770 James L. Hart Pkwy., Ypsilanti) offers all day ride armbands for $20, while offering the typical fair food and entertainment. I noticed the following $3 fair discount coupon when I stopped into the Girl Scout office yesterday too. The family carnival happens now through June 9. Hours this weekend are Friday 5:00 p.m.-midnight, Saturday noon-midnight and Sunday 3:00-10:00 p.m.

Get $3 off an unlimited ride armband for the Ypsilanti Family Carnival. Discount good on Thursday, June 6.

If adding a bit of culture to your outing is a goal, then the 7th annual Ya’ssoo Greek Festival (109 Scio Church Rd., Ann Arbor ) Weekend hours are Friday 11:00 a.m.-midnight; Saturday 11:00 a.m.-midnight; and Sunday from noon-6 p.m. The festival featuring Greek cuisine, live music and entertainment, dancing, a spectacular marketplace, and the Hellenic Cultural Exhibit. The festival offers free admission for children 12 and under and discount admission after 4:00 p.m. Friday and 1:00 p.m. Saturday. Sunday offers free admission for everyone.

Friday, May 31:

If the weather doesn't cooperate, head to the Goldfish Swim School (2107 W Stadium Blvd, Ann Arbor) for their family swim event 6:30-8:00 p.m. Current families swim free however the event is open to the public for swimmers too for $5 a swimmer or $15 for the entire family!

The Milan Community Fair happens this weekend, may 30 through June 1. TFriday night though, enjoy their spectacular fireworks display at dusk. I have been told the Milan fireworks is an exceptional show too! I am assuming there is a rain date in case of inclement weather however that information isn't found on their website.

Saturday, June 1:

A few weeks ago I listed the many great summer reading programs. Barnes & Noble (3235 Washtenaw Ave., Ann Arbor) is kicking off their Summer Reading Program at 10:00 a.m. storytelling, free crafts for kids, pictures with Beauty from The Singing Princess Entertainment, and a sing-a-long. Stop in to pick up some great summer reading for your kids and stay to check out this fun event! THAT'S an incentive worth bragging about.

Would you rather hang outside on Saturday? Then spend the day 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. at the Cedar Lake Outdoor Center (2500 Pierce Rd., Chelsea). A variety of fun-filled, educational activities will be available for all ages including duck and goose calling demonstrations, archery, small caliber shooting, waterfowl biology and habitat exhibits, dog demonstrations, field first aid, and waterfowl identification. Your outdoor-loving-child or scout will love this free event!

The Peony Festival and sale happens tomorrow at the Matthai Botanical Gardens, but the kids can get into the action too. From noon-2:00 p.m. there are free kids crafts next to the Reader Center with free Children's Peony Bingo happening all day!

For the family that loves local history, why not take a tour of Sharon Mills? Visit the historic building along the River Raisin and learn about its varied history. The free tours happen at 1:00-4:00 p.m.

Want to get up-close and personal with the raptors at the Leslie Science & Nature Center (1831 Traver Rd., Ann Arbor)? Today would be a great day to do that while experiencing a feeding!  Saturdays throughout June, from  1:00-3:00 p.m. stop in to see how a bird's feet and beak work together to help them eat. Volunteers will be feeding the birds and answering your questions.

Spend the afternoon hiking in the Kosch Headwaters Preserve with Washtenaw County Parks and Recreation.  See what is growing, look for wildflowers and ferns, and “tune into” the birds and other animals of the forest. This is a free event at 2:00-4:00 p.m. Dress for the weather and being outdoors.

If your kids are interested in learning more about gardening, then perhaps they could help plant the annual learning garden at the Ypsilanti District Library (Superior). Kids will get dirty digging in the soil 2:00 - 4:00 p.m.

Does your teen enjoy music? Then "LIVE on Washington" is just the event for them.  From 2:00-10:0 p.m., check out the teen outdoor music festival in the 300 block of E. Washington (between 5th and Division St.) for music and entertainment, art, a giant slide, and the ever present food vendors. This is a free teen event.

Sunday, June 2:

If critters are your child's "thing" then stepping into the Critter House at the Leslie Science and Nature Center would be an excellent experience. From noon-3:00 p.m. Sundays throughout June, come in to observe frogs, turtles, snakes, rabbits, and as they hop, crawl, and slither in their homes! Spending time at the Critter House is an excellent way to get up close and personal with many of Mother Nature's friends while helping your child develop an appreciation for the natural world.

The Saline Rec Center is hosting a free family fun daynoon-6:00 p.m. Stop in for summer discounts or some free eats. Families can also try out a fitness class, play on the new Pirate Ship or to receive a free child ID kit.

Week 12 - Weekend Events Round-up: March 22-24

There are lots of great things happening this weekend and it seems too that there are many Easter Egg Hunts starting up including the Jaycees' Frog Island Park hunt and one at Hudson Mills. Be sure to check the Ypsilanti/Ann Arbor Egg Hunt post for more information. For something to do, also consider visiting the Easter Bunny at Briarwood Mall.

If that's not your thing, this weekend the Wild Swan Theater is presenting 'Peter Rabbit' at Towsley Auditorium (Morris Lawrence Building - 4800 E. Huron River Dr., Ann Arbor) Friday (10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.), Saturday (11:00 a.m.). Tickets for the production are $12 for adults and $8 for youth and seniors. $3 lap passes are available for infants and children under 2 years of age.

My family will be busy wrapping up the Upward Cheer season, creating beautiful Ukrainian Easter Eggs and prepping for the holiday, which means cleaning. And by cleaning that means that *I* will be cleaning while everyone else will do whatever it is they do when I am cleaning, and re-cleaning their newest messes. Sigh...

Start the day at 10:00 a.m. with a blast of spring as your child explores the Fairie Gardens at  Matthaei Botanical Gardens (1800 N. Dixboro Rd., Ann Arbor). Kids even get to craft their own Fairy Door! This event requires per-registration.  This workshop costs $10.00/child and includes materials and activities.

Need an excuse to hide away in the warmth of a movie theater? Well the weekend won't let you down since there are free movies at the local Quality Theaters at 9:00 and 10:00 a.m. This weekend see Rise of the Guardians. In My opinion, this movie was worth seeing too. See my review of Rise of the Guardians.


Want to check out some real bunnies while enjoying a special spring craft and storytime? Then Hop to It by heading to the Ypsilanti District Library (5577 Whittaker Rd., Ypsilanti) at 10:30 a.m.This free event replaces the regular storytime and will feature critters from the Great Lakes Rabbit Sanctuary. We've attended this event in year's past and found it to be quite crowded, so make sure to get there early! If you can't make it to the library, Nicola's Books (2513 Jackson Rd., Ann Arbor) also has a story time program at 11:00 a.m. featuring Peter Rabbit.


I have mentioned in the past few weeks that there is an free educational program going on at the University of Michigan Museum of Natural History (1109 Geddes Ave. Ann Arbor) called DNA and Race. The free 20-30 minute interactive program is at 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. for kids ages 5+. Explore DNA and learn to better understand how it makes up the cells that make our bodies and even extract and examine their own DNA! Take the family to spend the day and enjoy free dinosaur tours as well. If science is your child's "thing" the University of Michigan Museum of Natural History is hosting a second hands-on demo event at the Ann Arbor District Library (343 S. Fifth Ave., Ann Arbor) 1:00-4:00 p.m. where kids will design and fly a spacecraft during the Kerbal Space Program. There will even be a prize awarded for the farthest successful return trip!

Maybe free kids crafts are your thing. If that's the case, let your kids explore their creativity for only $2, while you shop. Every 30-minutes starting at 10:00-11:30 a.m., store associates will help your children create their own Easter Egg Mosiac. Your teens can event get crafty with a free teen event at the Ann Arbor District Library (3090 E. Eisenhower Pky., Ann Arbor) at 2:00 p.m. creating jewelry and embellishments from hardware - That's washer's and nuts!

It will be a chilly evening, but that makes the after-hike bonfire even more enticing... On Saturday night, head out for the Almost the Worm Moon - Night Hike and Campfire at Park Lyndon (18801 N Territorial Rd., Chelsea) 7:30-9:30 p.m. Join naturalist Faye Stoner to hike the trail to the wetlands and back, talk about seasonal changes, listen for night sounds, learn about frogs and owls and other night animals, and look for the moon! Hot drinks and fire in the fireplace will be enjoyed at the end of the hike. Dress to be warm
for the hike.

Certainly above I mentioned visiting the Easter Bunny and Briarwood Mall, however it is worth pointing out that at 9:00-11:00 a.m. special needs children can visit the "Caring Bunny" in a more controlled atmosphere!
 
Your kids can still have a great experience at the University of Michigan Museum of Natural History for free dinosaur tours and the hands-on DNA demo at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday.

Need another crafting opportunity?? How about 8-Bit Stitch at Ann Arbor District Library (343 S. Fifth Ave., Ann Arbor) at 2:00 p.m. Teens in grades 6+ can dig into DIY and crafty things by converting classic video game graphics into cross-stitch patterns.  Learn the basic techniques so that other classic characters can be turned into patterns to be made later.For the younger set, be sure to stop by your local Joanne's at 2:00 p.m. to create a cute t-shirt headband during their free make-it-take-it event.

Chelsea Hometown Holiday Festival This Weekend

From November 30 through December 2, downtown Chelsea will be decked out in holiday splendor to warm the hearts and  spirits of families throughout the community. Make sure to stop by for some hometown charm, browsing the shops or attending special events happening that capture the spirit of the holiday season.

Families are sure to enjoy the tree lighting ceremony, visits with Santa, the holiday of lights parade, plus the many other holiday activities and entertainment  throughout Chelsea. Throughout the weekend, gingerbread house displays are sure to tempt and treat, there are many entertainment options including the Nutcracker ballet, head on over to enjoy Christmas on the Farm, or sing holiday songs.  It's sure to be a holiday to remember for the whole family!

Christmas on the Farm at Waterloo Farm Museum

Enjoy a re-creation of holiday traditions of a past era - specifically the 1840's - this weekend at the Waterloo Farm Museum (9998 Waterloo Munith Rd., Grass Lake) Saturday, December 1, 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. and Sunday, December 2, noon - 4:00 p.m. The day will include tours of the ten-room farmhouse, the authentic log house, eight outbuildings, and a traditional Christmas program at the one-room Dewey School.

Some of the sights and sounds you will see during the day include natural decorations of dried herbs, spices, flowers, nuts, cedar and pine, costumed guides in holiday finery, musical entertainment, savory scents of a traditional 1840's Christmas diner, and a working blacksmith. Free refreshments and musical entertainment will be among the offerings for this homespun weekend. Don't forget to bring you wallet either, as hand-crafted greens, home-made baked goods, and gift items for your family holiday traditions will also be available for purchase!

Admission to the Waterloo Farm Museum grounds for this event is $5/adults and $2/children 5-12. Children under 5 receive free admission to the event.

Weekend Events Round-Up: July 27-29

The weekend is here, and even though it looks like the Ann Arbor area may have rain today (possibly foiling some outdoor plans) there is plenty to do for the kids. I personally am hoping the rain holds off just a wee bit (or finishes by 5:00-ish) so that we can sleep in a tent tonight without getting wet - Yes it's a family camping weekend! 

For those of you looking for Ann Arbor events, there are many including free dinosaur tours, story time programs, free tours at the Rentschler Farm, a weekend festival in Chelsea, and Maker Fair at the Henry Ford. So get your weekend planner out, grab a pencil and add a few fun events to your weekend plans!

This weekend, area families can enjoy Chelsea's Sounds & Sights 3-day festival in Downtown Chelsea (M-52/Main St.). Most of the festival is free fun, with a $5.00 cover for the festival social tent, so there should be lots to see and do. Festival goers will find an art market and demonstrations, children’s entertainment and activities, a classic car show and an open-air art market. Times for this festival are Thursday: 6:00-11:00 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from noon-11:00 p.m.

Friday, July 27

Check out our amazing universe at the Dexter District Library (3255 Alpine St., Dexter)during a free kids program. Your kids will learn about and explore the mysteries of outer space, planets and stars!  11:00 a.m. free admission for ages 5+.

Your kids won't even know they are learning as they sharpen their math skills during a free educational program sponsored by Mathnasium of Ann Arbor. Stop by the Ann Arbor District Library (Traverwood Branch) at 1:30-2:30 p.m. for this free program for kids in grades K-3.

Mathnasium coaches present math games and strategies that improve math skills, understanding of concepts, and overall school performance while building confidence and forging a positive attitude toward the subject. 

If the rain doesn't let up, your teen might get a kick out of this event for teens age 15+. AT 2:30 p.m. teens can stop by the Ypsilanti District Library (229 W. Michigan Ave., Ypsilanti ) to watch The Lord of the Rings :The Return of the King. Enjoy  J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic fantasy saga, eat some popcorn and stay for a lively group discussion.

Need to shake it a little after a hectic week? Then the entire family will likely enjoy the Just Dance! Dance Off! at Ann Arbor District Library (343 S. Fifth Ave., Ann Arbor) at 6:00-8:30 p.m. The free event, geared for teens in grades 6+ (and adults!)will allow everyone to cut a rug on the Wii for prizes. Awards will be handed to the participants with the flyest threads, most swagger on the dance floor and of course the winners of the dance- off. 

Take the entire family to a drop in art session at the FLY Children's Art Center at 6:00 p.m. for amazing duct tape art. The program cost is only $10 per participant and helps the center provide classes for youth in need. Register at info@flyartcenter.org.  Kids can make a stylish purse that looks like vinyl, a cute and functional rose that uses a pen as the stem, a duct-tape wallet, or a cool piece of unique wall art, the choice is yours. The class is best suited to students ages 8 and up.

Take your Jr. Maker to the Grange Junior Makers program at the Pittsfield Grange (3337 Ann Arbor-Saline Rd., Ann Arbor) at 10:00 a.m. then head to Maker Fair Detroit for a bigger display of creativity! Your kids will be glad to check everything out, and who knows it might get theirs AND your brains working OT.

Is racing around the track your idea of fun (virtual racing that is!)? The the Ann Arbor District Library Smash Kart: Summer Season Round 2 (343 S. Fifth Ave., Ann Arbor) is the place to be! Teens (grades 6+) can participate in a fun free event with prizes awarded for Super Smash Brothers and Mario Kart Double Dash team and single player events AND new prizes for trivia, outrageous outfits and more! 1:00-5:00 p.m.

Beat the heat by taking the family to enjoy Summer Splash Days at Veterans Memorial Pool (2150 Jackson Ave., Ann Arbor) from 2:00-4:00 p.m. Kids ages 6-12 can join in the fun with water balloon events, water baseball, raft races and a hula hoop relay. Regular pool admission prices apply.

The Kerrytown Market & Shops (407 N. Fifth Ave., Ann Arbor) have a courtyard concert featuring Drummunity at 1:00 p.m. This free concert is a great way to start your Sunday together. Kinds even get the chance to play on a collection of hand drums and percussion toys. 

Feeling crafty? Then take kids ages 3 and up to Michael's Crafts for a free craft project. From 1:00-4:00 p.m. kids will explore India during their Passport to Imagination event!

Learn the history of the stereoscope, and build and decorate your own stereoscope camera and viewer in this unique 2:00 p.m. workshop.
