Weekend Events Round-Up: June 28-30

I meant to post this last night, however I was a bit preoccupied fretting over whether our basement would flood. It didn't thankfully and the water has now receded.

Yes, yes, I fretted and simply didn't get things posted. But there is lots to do in Ann Arbor tonight including Ann Arbor Summer Festival's Top of the Park events and performances for families - The KidZone, Superhero, a kids music workshop, musical performances, and the movie the Iron Giant - Just check out the A2SF listing for all of the great events happening!

The  62nd annual Ann Arbor Jaycees Carnival (Pioneer High School) is running this weekend too with free admission before 9:00 p.m. Find rides, midway games, food and fun. Carnival hours are 4:00-11:00 p.m. Friday, noon-11:00 p.m. Saturday and Noon-9:00 p.m. Sunday. More information at carnival@a2jaycees.org.

For parents with young children, the grand opening of the new play area at Briarwood Mall on Saturday (11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.) might be a perfect diversion. Radio Disney will be there to celebrate as well, so older siblings will enjoy that. The free event will include a ribbon cutting, and special give-aways every 15 minutes. Kids can also get free temporary tattoos, enjoy a coloring activity station and interactive gaming station.

• 4:00-5:00 p.m. Crazy Craig at the Ypsilanti District Library (229 W. Michigan Ave., Ypsilanti). Prepare your family to be astounded and dazzled by juggling, unicycle riding, and devil stick twirling. Find magic tricks, stunts, and so much more at this free performance. 
• 9:45-11:45 p.m. Kids experience a Hands on interactive event with Superhero at Top of the Park. Superhero is an interactive projection mapping experience in which participants are transformed into superheroes. Fly over Ann Arbor while enjoying many super powers like throwing light balls, becoming gigantic/tiny, and flying!
• 10:00 p.m. Whitmore Lake fireworks!

Sunday, June 30

• 12:00-3:00 p.m. Leslie Science & Nature Center Critter House open and free to the public

So whatever you do with the kids in Ann Arbor, be sure to get out and about for fun. For your viewing pleasure, here is another shot of the Ypsilanti flood yesterday. This is the path behind my home - Pretty amazing huh? I am certainly glad our sump-pump kept pumping!

Do any of you have memories of playing in rain run-off as children? I do. And yes, we did take the obligatory disinfectant bath after splashing in all of the puddles!

Weekend Event Round-up: Nov 9-11

There is always so much going on around Ann Arbor and the surrounding communities. When the kids were younger we took full advantage of storytime programs that were often followed by a short craft and sometimes a snack, we also took full advantage of the MANY parks and loved participating with the many free programs offered by the naturalists at Washtenaw County Parks & Recreation. We also searched for weekly programs and activities - Which is part of why I started blogging to begin with!

For this weekend? Well tomorrow we'll be attending the EMU vs. CMU football game with my Cub Scouts and Daisy's (Fire Up Chips!) and continuing to pick up the house after having a small repair in our home. (By small I mean a pinprick in the water line to the fridge that caused some damage! Nothing like a little pin "prick" to ruin your day eh?)

There are a few things happening all weekend, like the Ann Arbor Civic Junior Theatre production of Stuart Little, Fri-Sun at 7:30 p.m. and Sat-Sun at 11:00 a.m. Your entire family can get an inexpensive night out for only $8/adult, and $5/child. Tickets are available at the door or by calling  (734) 971-2228.

Friday, November 9:

Did you miss out on going on a hayride or corn maze? Well Three Cedars Farm (7897 Six Mile Rd.,   Northville) is still open all weekend for those latecomers...  Their hours this weekend are Fri-Sun 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. Enjoy donuts and cider, take a hayride, wander through the cornmaze, or watch the kids enjoy the play area. Their store however will be closed to decorate for Santa's visit!

Saturday, November 10:


Buhr Park Outdoor Ice Arena opens today for the 2012-13 season. The lobby is heated, vending machines are available and there are skate rentals for those who do not own their own skates. New this year, families might also consider buying a discount ice skating pass for Buhr (also valid at Veterans Memorial Indoor Ice Arena) for 10 or 30 visits! visit www.a2gov.org/buhr for open skate times. Skating is a great way to stay active in the winter too.


Take your little nature lover, age 1-5, to the Leslie Science and Nature Center (1831 Traver Rd., Ann Arbor) for Turtle Tales at 10:00 a.m. The fee for this program is only $2.00 and pre-registration is not required. Enjoy a story followed by a few hands-on, nature-themed activities and live animal visits. Turtle Tales runs throughout the month or November.

Your little scientist will enjoy the many great programs available at the University of Michigan Museum of Natural History (1109 Geddes Ave., Ann Arbor) today. The kids could even spend all day exploring science without getting bored! First have your child "see" what the hype is about during a hands-on eye dissection at 11:00 a.m. where your child can dissect a cow's eyeball. Then head to the planetarium show at 12:30 p.m. for a $5 view of planets and galaxies. Have a quick bite to eat then take the 2:00 p.m. free dinosaur tour. Sounds like a good way to spend the day with the family in Ann Arbor right?

You can get a second chance at dissection at 3:00 p.m. or take the 2:30 dinosaur tour too!

If your teen is bored, make sure to get them up off the couch with Hip op with Tiffany at the Ypsilanti District Library (229 W. Michigan Ave., Ypsilanti) at 2:30 p.m. This free program helps teens learn to dance.

Feeling crafty? The Saline Craft Show is this weekend if you need some inspiration (or shopping therapy, but I encourage you to leave the kids home when shopping!) or take the kids to the Ypsilanti District Library (8795 MacArthur Blvd., Ypsilanti 48198) at 2:00 p.m. so they can create Thanksgiving or winter holiday cards. Knitting has turned into a "cool" event so your teen might enjoy learning to knit. Michael's Crafts has a free event at 10:00 a.m. - Noon where teens 14+ can learn to make a Yarn Scarf (with purchase of Craft Smart Yarn).

Sunday, November 11:

Your kids have three opportunities this weekend
to dissect a cow's eyeball at the University of
Michigan Museum of Natural History

Your little ones aren't left in the dust of the older kids crafting. In fact Michael's Crafts has a free event just for them too. From 1:00-3:00 p.m. kids ages 3 and up can make a Holiday Ornament while supplies last.

Take 2! Your kids have one more chance this weekend to participate in the eye dissection at  the University of Michigan Museum of Natural History at 3:00 p.m.

Incidentally if your children have Veteran's Day (Monday) off of school, the Metroparks are all offering free entry! Happy weekend everyone - May your weekend events be plenty and your planning be merry!

Weekend Events Round-Up: Aug 17-19

Oh these last few weeks are going to fly by for sure. There are so many great activities for the kids including festivals, and free events a plenty! I can't even keep up with them all, and will be happy when school is back in session!

This weekend's hot tickets include heading to the Ypsilanti Heritage Festival for free fun for the family, or take a little drive to Holly after picking up your 50% discount Michigan Renaissance Festival tickets (although you can use them any weekend before the end of September). If that's not enough, there are many library programs including teen events and weekly storytime programs to keep you busy!

Friday, August 17:

Kids can keep their Summer Math Skills sharp with a fun program with Mathnasium at the Ann Arbor District Library (3333 Traverwood Dr., Ann Arbor) at 1:30-2:30 p.m. Kids in Grades K – 3 can play with math as coaches from Mathnasium of Ann Arbor lead games and strategies that improve math skills.

Will your teen win at  Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 ?

This is your last chance for your teen to participate in Teen Gaming at the Ypsilanti District Library (229 W. Michigan Ave., Ypsilanti) at 2:00 p.m. Battle other gamers in Xbox tournaments for prizes during this fun teen event. This months battle is Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3.

Teens in grade 6+ can get a little Hair Flair at the Ann Arbor District Library (3090 E. Eisenhower Pky., Ann Arbor) at 4:00-5:00 p.m. Create one of a kind hair clips, combs and headbands to keep wayward locks under control while letting the real you shine!

Saturday, August 18:

The Ypsilanti Heritage Festival hits the streets of downtown Ypsilanti on Saturday at 10:00 a.m.

Earn some "Mom Buck's" during the Diary of a Wimpy Kid' Party at the Ypsilanti District Library (229 W. Michigan Ave., Ypsilanti) 10:30 a.m. Too bad you can't spend them, however you CAN play trivia games, eat some Wimpy cake. Plus everyone that attends will get to take home their own personalized diary!

The Ypsilanti Free Methodist Church (1800 Packard Rd., Ypsilanti) is having a "Back to School Bash" at 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. where 250 free backpacks will be given away. Kids who attend will also get to play fun games and snack on some munchies. This free event will be held in the church parking lot, which is located across from Estabrook Elementary in Ypsilanti.

Do you have a collector on your hands (and God help you if you do!)? Then the Sports Cards, Memorabilia, and Comics Show at the Ypsilanti District Library (5577 Whittaker Rd., Ypsilanti) is the place to be! From noon-5:00 p.m. dealers, collectors, hobbyists, and casual fans are welcome to buy, sell, and trade their sports cards, memorabilia, merchandise, and comic books during this free event.

Learn about nature and her pollinators during a free program through the Washtenaw County Parks and Recreation program at 1:00 p.m., my kids LOVE attending the programs with the naturalists! You're sure to BEE just as happy as my children are about it.

Teens in grades 6+ and adults will enjoy making their own ceramic tile during a Motawi Tile-Making Workshop at the Ann Arbor District Library (343 S. Fifth Ave., Ann Arbor). The free program (yes it's FREE!) is at 1:0-3:00 p.m. Attendees will make their own impressed tile, using Motawi’s clay and tools. Make it to keep or to give as a gift, you only need to go back later to pick it up after it is kiln fired!

Celebrate Percy Jackson's Birthday at the Ypsilanti District Library (5577 Whittaker Rd., Ypsilanti) at 2:00 p.m. enjoying games and crafts inspired by Rick Riordan’s series, Percy Jackson and the Olympians, featuring characters based on Greek mythology.

The Chelsea Community Fair isn't fully up and running, however you can get things rolling with free admission to Sunday's tractor pull at 9:00 a.m.

Did your child read all summer with the Summer Reading Program at the Ypsilanti District Library? Then be sure to stop by the Summer Reading Finale at the Heritage Festival noon-5 p.m. for an afternoon at the Children’s Activity Tent.

Need some Sunday Craftiness to happen? Then be sure to screen print a glowster (a poster using glow-in-the-dark ink) at the Ann Arbor District Library (343 S. Fifth Ave., Ann Arbor) at 1:00-3:00 p.m. All materials and supplies for this free event are provided.

Summer Skills Fun at AADL With Mathnasium

I'm certain that most parents don't let the summer slip away without adding a few educational opportunities - I'm always looking for something to do in Ann Arbor with kids, especially when it offers me some kind of teaching moment. That's one of the reasons I was excited to see that the Ann Arbor District Library has several "math" sessions this summer.

Want your children to have fun with and "play" with math? Then be sure to check out one of the four sessions offered this summer.

During each session at the Ann Arbor District Library, Mathnasium of Ann Arbor will have math coaches standing by for math games and strategies that will help your child improve their skills. Each session is fun (my kids really do LOVE Mathnasium), but also helps curb your child's summer learning loss while improving their skills and building confidence! This is a free event for students in grades K-3.

Stretch Your Math Noodle at the AADL

This Sunday, January 22, 1:00-3:00 p.m., kids in grades K-5 can relax and participate in a fun, free Ann Arbor District Library event (343 South Fifth Ave., Ann Arbor 48104) that focuses on math.

The event, sponsored by Mathnasium of Ann Arbor will allow the kids to play games with a chance to win great prize while pumping up their math muscles. The kids will practice addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division skills through fun games and team competitions that include learning geometry through Tangram puzzles!

So bring the kid-o's and let them stretch their noodle. They'll have so much fun they won't even realize they are learning something.

• Teens and their parents can learn about Solar Energy at the Ypsilanti District Library (Michigan Ave.) at 3:00 p.m. Discover how solar energy works and learn how to provide photovoltaic solar power for your home.

Sunday, January 15

• Celebrate Chinese New Year at theYpsilanti Library at 2:00 p.m.
• Family Dance at Pittsfield Grange  (3337 Ann Arbor-Saline Rd., Ann Arbor)  at 2:00-4:00 p.m.
   Cost: $12/family. Live music and dances suitable for children with their parents or grandparents, followed by Grange-baked cookies.

Kids Create a Hurricane Lantern

On Saturday, January 14, kids and teens, ages 7-18, can create their own colorful hurricane lantern at the Ypsilanti District Library (8795 MacArthur Blvd., Ypsilanti) at 2:00 p.m. Decorate a glass jar with supplies provided by YDL. Create a stylish handle with colored wire and beads. It makes a neat night-light when you put in a no-flame candle which we will provide.

Registration for this free event is required and only available to YDL cardholders. For more information call 482-4110 X1391.

                   

Open Studio Session with FLY Children’s Art Center!

Hey kids check out the free event at the Ypsilanti District Library (5577 Whittaker Rd., Ypsilanti) where you can participate in a free open studio art session with the Fly Children's Art Center! From 4:00-5:30 p.m. on January 9, February 23, March 15 and April 19, you can get creative and have some fun!
