In Ann Arbor, the celebration of the life of Martin Luther King Jr. provides families with several free and educational programs. From library events to musical performances to speeches and other free events; there will be several well-run programs for everyone in the family to enjoy.

MLK Celebration for the whole family will be held at YDL-Michigan (229 W Michigan Ave, Ypsilanti, MI 48197) and YDL-Whittaker (5577 Whittaker Rd, Ypsilanti, MI 48197). Through March 16, the Ypsilanti District Library is also hosting a national traveling exhibit, The Power of Children. It highlights the lives of three children who changed the course of history: Anne Frank, Ruby Bridges, and Ryan White. At the age of six, Ruby Bridges became the face of school de-segregation as the first African American child to attend a previously all-white school in New Orleans. Her confidence, optimism, and pride gave hope to a nation, giving energy to the Civil Rights movement as it dismantled Jim Crow laws. The exhibit is free and open to the public, and is on display in the Community Room at YDL-Whittaker whenever the library is open.

At YDL-Whittaker, families can learn more about African American Genealogy. On Saturday, January 19, 10:30 am - 12:30 pm, learn about the different resource or technique to help you discover your family history.

Families can get Free Admission to Henry Ford Museum (20900 Oakwood Blvd. Dearborn, MI 48124-4088 ) on January 21 to honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.  Come to The Henry Ford Museum for live music, dramatic presentations, make and take activities or sit in the seat that Rosa Parks did. The youngest residents of our community will enjoy watching the Wild Swan Theater production of
Under the African Sky running February 21-23 at the WCC Towsley Auditorium. I saw this production a few years ago with my sons class and really enjoyed it. In all, four shows will run. Memorial Day Weekend: Events, Parades and Ceremonies

This weekend is often thought of as the "official start to summer" kicking off with pool openings, BBQ's and family gatherings. It is important to remember though that it should also be a time of reflection and remembrance.

Luckily throughout Washtenaw County and the area, there are plenty of opportunities to experience events to help you do that. So save some gas money this holiday weekend and find something to do with the kids, right here at home. Honor the men and women of this great nation by attending one of the many Memorial Day ceremonies, processions and parades and then head out to experience the other free events happening. There will be plenty of fun for everyone!

Saturday, May 28:

Area Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts will gather at Highland Cemetery (943 N River St., Ypsilanti) to place flags on the graves of our fallen heroes starting at 10:00 a.m. Lunch is served to volunteers after flags have been placed.

Be sure to check out the Ypsilanti Symphony Orchestra's FREE concert in the park at 2:00 p.m. Bring your blanket and the family to enjoy patriotic music in the park.

Sunday, May 29:

The annual Memorial Day observance at Arborcrest Memorial Park (2521 Glazier Way, Ann Arbor) will start at 2:00 p.m. and lasts about an hour (rain or shine). Local dignitaries, the Washtenaw County Honor Guard, local Boy Scout troops and Miss Washtenaw are often in attendance.

The Yankee Air Museum always has something. On Saturday, May 28 participate in “Celebrate and Connect: Send a Million Letters to our Troops”starting at 10:00 am until 4:00 pm to support USO’s goal of collecting 1 million messages to share with those serving in the U.S. military worldwide. Gingerbread House Craft Programs

Every year my kids make a gingerbread house (or houses) to display at home. Mostly we buy the kits, but we've also participated in a few programs where the kids made them there. One of these days I will bake and make a house from scratch though. Given how much mess the whole project makes though, I really do lie making the houses elsewhere. That's one reason why I wanted to highlight these gingerbread houses making programs.

On December 5, at Michael's Crafts from 1:00-4:00 p.m. Join Michaels for some Gingerbread House building. Parents can buy the kit in the store, then join in the decorating with the supplies in the kit and other provided supplies. I personally think this is a great "keep the house clean" idea. My only concern would be transporting the "not dry" house home!

On Saturday, December 12 at the Ypsilanti District Library (Whittaker Branch) at 11:00 a.m. or at YDL (Michigan Branch) at 3:00 p.m., kids ages 2-12 can decorate a graham cracker "gingerbread" houses with icing and candy for a holiday decoration or tasty treat. Please register for either program on the YDL website, email: mitchell@ypsilibrary.org or by calling 734-482-4110 x1390.

Want to go ahead and build your own gingerbread house at home MLive has 5 great tips to building a gingerbread houseor watch this easy tutorial on making a gingerbread house from scratch! Have you heard of other local classes or programs for making a gingerbread house? Be sure to share them in the comments below.

Michigan State Fair 50% Discount Ultimate Wristband Tickets!

I have many fond memories of wandering the Michigan State Fair. I loved seeing all of the livestock exhibits, the homemaker and arts exhibits and the baby animal exhibits. I was always amazed at what other kids displayed and dreamed of winning a ribbon. Then one sad day the Michigan State Fair went away.

Several years ago I finally entered several jars of canned goods, photography and other pieces of art in the Saline Community Fair. Although it was not the exact same thing, I was excited that I won the ribbon that I had dreamed of. I have since submitted entries for the past several years and have even gotten the kids on the action after they realized they could earn a few dollars if their displays won!

I'll admit, I have not gone to the Fifth Third Bank Michigan State Fair since they moved to the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi. That was mostly due to us traveling at that time the last few years. It looks like this year however I'll be able to take my kids to the fair for their own experiences. The best part is, I can get Fifth Third Bank Michigan State Fair tickets at 50% off right now! That's a great family deal and definitely one to scoop up now!

The Fifth Third Bank Michigan State Fair runs September 4-7, 2015 at the Suburban Collection Showplace (46100 Grand River Ave., Novi MI 48374). Ticket prices start as low as $8 for entry into the fair, however on the website, they are offering an Ultimate Wristband for $30 which includes unlimited carnival rides, the exhibit hall, the agriculture and home arts shows, free entertainment, and a performance of the Shrine Circus.  You can get 50% off Michigan State Fair tickets though through July 26! That's just $15 for the Ultimate-Wristband and all that it entails!

We're going to attend this year, will you take the family to the fair?

Note - Some friends were confused by the mention of Fifth Third Bank. They are the sponsors and not where you pick-up tickets. The discount voucher reads like this: "Please print and present voucher or present on mobile phone at the Fifth Third Bank Michigan State Fair and visit the Carrot Pass/QR code experience line for express entry and to redeem voucher." Also note that you are limited to buying (4) tickets for yourself and (4) tickets for a friend with this deal!

Holiday Break Events & Activities

What do you do with the kids after Christmas during the holiday break? Believe it or not, there is a lot to do over the holiday break when the kids are not in school.

First up, be sure to check out the Hands-On Holidays at the Ann Arbor Hands On Museum (220 E. Ann St., Ann Arbor). The special exhibit happens December 26 through January 5.  Attendees will enjoy special activities, including make and take projects and special experiments, the AAHOM schedule is packed with hands-on excitement. Each activity highlights a science concept, making the programming educational and entertaining for children and adults alike.

We'll do lots of crafts at home, visit with my best friend when she comes into town and hopefully get out for some outdoor fun, ice or roller skating, or taking a winter hike! So what will you do with the kids over the holiday break? Most days there are several free activities happening around town - From free movies, to crafts, science and even teen activities. Check out all of the cool activities and fun for the kids!

Week 12 - Weekend Events Round-up: March 22-24

There are lots of great things happening this weekend and it seems too that there are many Easter Egg Hunts starting up including the Jaycees' Frog Island Park hunt and one at Hudson Mills. Be sure to check the Ypsilanti/Ann Arbor Egg Hunt post for more information. For something to do, also consider visiting the Easter Bunny at Briarwood Mall.

If that's not your thing, this weekend the Wild Swan Theater is presenting 'Peter Rabbit' at Towsley Auditorium (Morris Lawrence Building - 4800 E. Huron River Dr., Ann Arbor) Friday (10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.), Saturday (11:00 a.m.). Tickets for the production are $12 for adults and $8 for youth and seniors. $3 lap passes are available for infants and children under 2 years of age.

Here are the Pysanska Ukrainian Easter eggs the kids created in 2012.

My family will be busy wrapping up the Upward Cheer season, creating beautiful Ukrainian Easter Eggs and prepping for the holiday, which means cleaning. And by cleaning that means that *I* will be cleaning while everyone else will do whatever it is they do when I am cleaning, and re-cleaning their newest messes. Sigh...

What are your weekend plans? Found any activities to keep the kids busy? The Ann Arbor Mom always has ideas for fun, free (or cheap) activities or Ann Arbor events to fill your weekend event planner!

Saturday, March23

Start the day at 10:00 a.m. with a blast of spring as your child explores the Fairie Gardens at  Matthaei Botanical Gardens (1800 N. Dixboro Rd., Ann Arbor). Kids even get to craft their own Fairy Door! This event requires per-registration.  This workshop costs $10.00/child and includes materials and activities.

Need an excuse to hide away in the warmth of a movie theater? Well the weekend won't let you down since there are free movies at the local Quality Theaters at 9:00 and 10:00 a.m. This weekend see Rise of the Guardians. In My opinion, this movie was worth seeing too. See my review of Rise of the Guardians.

Want to check out some real bunnies while enjoying a special spring craft and storytime? Then Hop to It by heading to the Ypsilanti District Library (5577 Whittaker Rd., Ypsilanti) at 10:30 a.m.This free event replaces the regular storytime and will feature critters from the Great Lakes Rabbit Sanctuary. We've attended this event in year's past and found it to be quite crowded, so make sure to get there early! If you can't make it to the library, Nicola's Books (2513 Jackson Rd., Ann Arbor) also has a story time program at 11:00 a.m. featuring Peter Rabbit.

I have mentioned in the past few weeks that there is an free educational program going on at the University of Michigan Museum of Natural History (1109 Geddes Ave. Ann Arbor) called DNA and Race. The free 20-30 minute interactive program is at 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. for kids ages 5+. Explore DNA and learn to better understand how it makes up the cells that make our bodies and even extract and examine their own DNA! Take the family to spend the day and enjoy free dinosaur tours as well. If science is your child's "thing" the University of Michigan Museum of Natural History is hosting a second hands-on demo event at the Ann Arbor District Library (343 S. Fifth Ave., Ann Arbor) 1:00-4:00 p.m. where kids will design and fly a spacecraft during the Kerbal Space Program. There will even be a prize awarded for the farthest successful return trip!

Maybe free kids crafts are your thing. If that's the case,EASTER EGG MOSAIC BY PERLER® BEADS let your kids explore their creativity for only $2, while you shop. Every 30-minutes starting at 10:00-11:30 a.m., store associates will help your children create their own Easter Egg Mosiac. Your teens can event get crafty with a free teen event at the Ann Arbor District Library (3090 E. Eisenhower Pky., Ann Arbor) at 2:00 p.m. creating jewelry and embellishments from hardware - That's washer's and nuts!

It will be a chilly evening, but that makes the after-hike bonfire even more enticing... On Saturday night, head out for the Almost the Worm Moon - Night Hike and Campfire at Park Lyndon (18801 N Territorial Rd., Chelsea) 7:30-9:30 p.m. Join naturalist Faye Stoner to hike the trail to the wetlands and back, talk about seasonal changes, listen for night sounds, learn about frogs and owls and other night animals, and look for the moon! Hot drinks and fire in the fireplace will be enjoyed at the end of the hike. Dress to be warm
for the hike.

Sunday, March 24

Certainly above I mentioned visiting the Easter Bunny and Briarwood Mall, however it is worth pointing out that at 9:00-11:00 a.m. special needs children can visit the "Caring Bunny" in a more controlled atmosphere!

Your kids can still have a great experience at the University of Michigan Museum of Natural History for free dinosaur tours and the hands-on DNA demo at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday.

Need another crafting opportunity?? How about 8-Bit Stitch at Ann Arbor District Library (343 S. Fifth Ave., Ann Arbor) at 2:00 p.m. Teens in grades 6+ can dig into DIY and crafty things by converting classic video game graphics into cross-stitch patterns.  Learn the basic techniques so that other classic characters can be turned into patterns to be made later. For the younger set, be sure to stop by your local Joanne's at 2:00 p.m. to create a cute t-shirt headband during their free make-it-take-it event.
