Safety First When Swimming This Summer

I suppose that part of the reason we have been hitting swim lessons hard this summer is that later this summer we are renting a houseboat with another family. Houseboat + water = anxious mama when you consider that neither of my kids have expressed an interest in swimming.

My son has always had a fear of the water despite taking infant swim lessons. He just could not seem to get past the water in the nose thing. What did we do? Get him a really good snorkel mask and let time play out. Eventually peer pressure and watching his friends swim in the deep end helped motivate him to "want" to swim. So last summer, at age 8, we tried teaching him. Apparently moms and dads aren't always the best teachers, so this spring we dropped him into Jump Start Swim Lessons at Goldfish Swim School Ann Arbor. We decided to give him two more months of lessons - Which he has pretty much progressed out of. I'm shocked at how far he got with just a few lessons. He is now a proficient swimmer in many strokes. Now he just needs to build strength and endurance.

My daughter used to LOVE the water, swimming like a fish. Eventually though she gave in to her brother's fear and stopped putting her face int he water. What?! So this spring she too dove into lessons. She's still a beginning swimmer, one I am likely to continue lessons for, however I feel much better about her being on the houseboat. We're still likely to keep her life-vest handy though!

Kids taking swim lessons is one of the best ways to help them combat a fear of the water
while swimming more confidently and safely.
Next week is Safety Week at Goldfish Swim School, where the kids will have an additional 5 minutes of safety instruction with their lessons. However swimming safely is an important topic, especially this time of the year, so I'd like to share the following swimming safety tips from Goldfish Swim School. More details can be found at their Safe Summer Swimming blog post.

It's common knowledge, but we all need to remember to use the buddy system, never swimming alone! Even at a public pool where there is a lifeguard, your child should have a buddy with the same skills. This allows the children to swim together keeping tabs on one another. If the buddy gets out to use the bathroom, both buddies should. With that however it also bears repeating that parents should also maintain constant supervision when they their children are at the beach or pool.

Knowing the rules is an important step in water safety.Make sure your kids know water safety rules or don't allow them to swim. Remind them, and remind them often. They should know where they can and can not swim at the beach or pool, swimming only in designated areas. They should know who will be watching them, and finally they should be fitted with a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket. We have our own life jackets that we take everywhere. Kids should know how to properly wear them and parents need to check often. Remember kids grow, so checking the fit of the life-vest at the start and throughout the summer season is important.

Last summer I found my neighbors toddler after he had escaped their yard and scaled my fence. I found him in our small inflatable pool. What would have happened if I found him unconscious in the pool? It's something that made me stop to consider the surroundings of our pool. Each family needs to make sure their backyard pool, even small inflatable ones, are properly outfitted for safety, it's the law!

Did you know that in 2012 drowning was the leading cause of death in children age 1-4? Swim lessons can help, and actually are known to reduced instances of drowning in that age of child. Making sure your child is comfortable in water, knows how to remain calm and get help can save lives. Making sure your child is comfortable in the water and prepared will assure everyone in the family will have an enjoyable time in the water, whether that is in the pool, lake, river or stream!

Want to know more about safe summer swimming? Be sure to visit the Goldfish Swim School blog, or better yet, head over to the Goldfish Swim School Ann Arbor (2107 W Stadium Blvd, Ann Arbor) and sign up for lessons. While they are on the pricier end of swim lessons, the outcome far super-cedes the cost. I am very pleased that we did and wouldn't go anywhere else now for our swim lessons. I am now more relaxed, and looking forward to our time later this summer on the houseboat!

Summer Camp at Liberty Athletic Club

Earlier this spring, I was invited to the Liberty Athletic Club to check out what they had to offer in the way of summer day camp experiences. The facility was impressive and and the camps they are offering throughout the summer sure sound fun!

I was greeted by a full tour of the facility and all it has to offer for the kids, from indoor fun, swimming (they have an indoor waterpark as well as an outdoor waterpark!), tennis, a rock wall, outdoor open spaces and a fun play-scape. The Liberty Athletic Club really does have a summer program that'll help keep kids (ages 5 through the teen years) active and make the most of summer vacation while putting the parents minds at ease.

Summer Camp Staff:
I was impressed by the professionalism and enthusiasm of the staff members I met with. While I toured the facility, my daughter was invited to participate in one of the Liberty Athletic Club kids classes -Shake, Rattle and Roll playtime - and when I came back, she didn't want to leave! Actually everyone I met in the facility was helpful, friendly and ready to break into a quick smile.

The Facility:
It's really hard to say anything except, it was beautiful, well maintained and very busy for the middle of the day! I received a complete tour that included where the kids would be rain or shine at any time throughout the day; I would feel confident knowing that my kids were someplace safe and fun no matter what the weather!

With a long-standing tradition of providing children with a friendly and safe environment, sending your kids to summer camp at the Liberty Athletic Club would be a great summer investment. For more information you can reach the club at (734) 665-3738 or by visiting the Liberty Athletic Club website.

Castaway Bay: Our Ohio Waterpark Experience!

Castaway Bay, Sandusky Ohio - 2011
I was given the opportunity to check out Castaway Bay indoor waterpark (Sandusky, OH) and the Spa at Castaway Bay this past weekend - it was amazing to think that my opinion might be of value to someone! It was a special "mommy blogger" event with several amazing woman from Ohio, Illinois and Michigan - OK who am I kidding, it wasn't the networking aspect so much as it was a free night away and waterpark passes for the family. I've wanted to stay at Castaway Bay for some time, so this event was the perfect opportunity!

REVIEW of CASTAWAY BAY

Castaway Bay is a family destination, especially families with younger children. It is large enough for everyone to enjoy, but not large enough to worry about where your children are. There are many amenities to enjoy too, including a full service spa, the waterpark with lots of slides, a toddler area and a wave pool, an arcade, and family activities including the kids club with daily activities such as karaoke, face painting, arts & crafts and much more. There are also several restaurants on property with reasonably priced resort food - I consider that higher priced than heading to fast food, but worth staying in for! I'll admit, we did not get to explore everything during our brief stay but I did get a chance to visit the spa; During the blogger event, I got a full tour of the spa and was even a lucky recipient of a spa treatment.

OUR ROOM: As my husband and I are both former employees at Cedar Point, I should remember that the entire staff tries very hard to please their audience - And please them they do. Our room was spotless and immaculately prepared for us with two double beds, a small table and a amoire with a TV, fridge and microwave in addition to the typical bathroom amenities. It was not overly small nor overly large, it was just right for my family of 4 - Don't expect to pop a jumbo bag of popcorn in the in-room micro though and consider bringing your own pillows. (I'm picky about my pillows.)
The kids were safe exploring all that Castaway Bay waterpark had to offer!
It's perfect for families and would make a great family reunion destination.
THE WATERPARK: The waterpark was the perfect temperature, both in and out of the water. The entire family loved hanging out in the indoor/outdoor spa, watching the steam gently swirl around us almost as much as we loved the water slides and the wave pool. I think my husband especially liked escaping to the hot tub as he was left with the kids while I was at the blogger event!

Their snack bar is also conveniently placed within the pool area for easy access, and there was PLENTY of seating available. Seating is so important and from experience not available at other waterparks; typically you scramble for chairs to plop down on and that was not the case at Castaway Bay! As this was President's Day weekend, I expected many people at the resort, however it was not overly crowded. For families with younger, less patient children, I would suggest hitting the slides early or late in the day though for the shortest wait times!

Zach and Linus - The entire staff at
Castaway Bay Staff tried really
hard to make our vacation
wonderful!
DINING: We opted to grab a quick bite Saturday morning at Ebb & Eddy's instead of waiting the whopping 10 minutes for Mango Mike's. It offered us the changes to quickly grab some coffee, fruit, yogurt and donuts for the kids. Everyone was simply so anxious to get to the waterpark, that I had to quash the whining quickly. In the afternoon, after burning a few calories, the family ate pizza and pulled pork at Big Daddy's Snack Shack, located within the waterpark - The food was good, nicely prepared and we were waited on by friendly, happy staff.

THE STAFF: From the gal checking us in, to the lifeguards, to the foodservice professional's, everyone was smiling - We had fabulous service from everyone that we met. My kids enjoyed meeting some of the Peanut's gang too, although I'll admit, we must be slacking as good parents because neither child know Linus or Lucy!

THE SPA: The mom blogger event was held on the deck of the private pool at the spa. We toured the facilities, the massage rooms, pedicure room and pool; the entire environment surrounded us with relaxation and pampering, which is what we needed. Even the upstairs waiting room was nicely appointed with plants and a tranquil fountain. My spa treatment Saturday was of course fabulous too - It was very relaxing and left my skin soft and glowing! The spa would make a nice addition to a girls weekend or even a family reunion being held at the resort - let the mom's get out and play while everyone else is enjoying the waterpark or arcade.

The spa was a relaxing
tranqil treat!
For all that was wonderful, there really was nothing to complain about - And that isn't because the vacation was free, but because it is evident that the everyone employed at Castaway Bay takes pride is their service, the cleanliness of the resort and ensures that the families who visit have fun! My biggest complaint was the route our GPS took us across the scenic rural roads of Ohio, but that's another story...

Since Ann Arbor Mom likes to offer money saving ideas for families, I'd like to highlight that the resort often offers up special pricing throughout the year, and even gives kids a free waterpark day pass for their birthday when they join the kids club.

As an added bonus, Ann Arbor Mom blog readers should check out the special Castaway Bay pricing for your next waterpark vacation at Catsaway Bay. So when the Michigan weather gets to you, head to the indoor warmth and relaxation of Castaway Bay, you won't be disappointed!

I would like to thank the ThunderTech marketing group for the private viewing of the Spa at Castaway Bay and the vacation/waterpark passes for my family. We enjoyed ourselves and will be back!
