Discounted Michigan Renaissance Festival Tickets

I know it's not a local event, however the  Michigan Renaissance Fest (12600 Dixie Hwy, Holly, MI) is a great experience to have at least once in your life. Mom, dad and the kids are sure to enjoy spending the day on the grounds exploring all there is to see, do and eat!

When I was in college I spent a season at the festival as a street performer. it was a lot of long days and hard work, but I loved it. It was an experience like no other. I've been wanting to take my kids to the festival for the past few summers, but for one reason or another, we were unable to go. When I saw this amazing ticket deal though, I couldn't pass up going.

Get your discount MichiganRenaissance Festival tickets today!
Right now CBS local is offering deeply discount tickets - $11/adult and $6.50/kids ages 5-12 - That's over a 50% discount on Michigan Renaissance Festival tickets! I know that the day will cost much more with food and all, but for this price, I can afford to take the entire family for a day of fun.

From past experiences, I can recommend getting there early to park. It's difficult to say how different things will be now, I noticed that a few friends still performing (like my friend Rob from Pippin Puppets) with many new acts being offered. I can't wait to share the experience with the kids! The Festival runs weekends & Labor Day, from 10am-7pm, from August 22nd thru October 4th, PLUS Festival Friday, October 2nd. Then after the festival, get in the spooky spirit of the Halloween season with fun activities at Halloween In Hollygrove with discounted ticket prices of $25 for one-entry to the Horton Lake Outbreak At Halloween In Hollygrove or $27.50 for one-ticket to the Phantom's Feast At Halloween In Hollygrove.

One hint to new comers. Don't ask any of the street performers where the restrooms are...  Then again, go ahead and prompt your kids to do it for you. You may get a big surprise!

My friend Rob of Pippin Puppets with my kids in 2013.

Now I need to go try and dig up a photo or two of my Ren Fest days...  The kids will get a kick out of that!

LEGOLAND® Discovery Center Michigan Celebrates Grand Opening

If you are a fan of the Ann Arbor Mom Facebook Page, then you saw some of the fun as it happened yesterday. I was excited to be able to participate in the grand opening celebration of the LEGOLAND® Discovery Center Michigan (at Great Lakes Crossing, 4000 Baldwin Rd, Auburn Hills, MI 48326)!

The grand opening celebration featured students, #LCDMichigan
Creative Crew members and Bertie the mascot, as well
as several dignitaries and adult guests.

The event featured representatives from local government, Merlin Entertainments, Visit Detroit, a second grade class from Grant Graham Elementary School as well as members of the #LCDMichigan Creative Crew!
It is so hard waiting! Members of the Creative Crew await
the end of the #LCDMichigan Grand Opening ceremony!

The LEGOLAND® Discovery Center Michigan opens today to the public. It is the  8th LEGOLAND Discovery Center in North America, the 14th globally and the 100th Midway attraction for Merlin Entertainments.

#LCDMichigan is located inside
Great Lakes Crossing in Auburn Hills.

LEGOLAND Discovery Center Michigan is a 32,000 square-foot indoor attraction featuring fun and exciting LEGO themed rides, including Kingdom Quest and Merlin’s Apprentice, a 4D Cinema that brings favorite LEGO characters to life, numerous themed build and play areas, and the highly anticipated MINILAND exhibit that displays beloved local Detroit landmarks made from LEGO bricks.

Tickets are available online and must be purchased in advance. For more information about ticket sales, LEGOLAND Discovery Center Michigan events and activities, or for more information, please visit www.legolanddiscoverycenter.com/michigan/ or the #LCDMichigan Facebook page.

“It has been a long and exciting journey leading to our grand opening, and we are grateful for the support we’ve received from the metro Detroit community,” said Hayley Anderson, general manager for LEGOLAND Discovery Center Michigan. “We are excited to give local children the unique opportunity to be immersed in a whole new colorful world of creativity, learning and imagination at LEGOLAND Discovery Center Michigan.”

To see some of the photos I took yesterday, be sure to see them on my Flickr page. I will say that my favorite part (as expected) was Miniland. My kids were exceptionally disappointed that I made them go to school yesterday instead of going to the celebration. A recent round of illness in the household meant missing school could not happen. They were however exceptionally excited to see the photos. They were even more excited to be able to identify many of the landmark models!

So that you can also enjoy some of the excitement from yesterday, please see the attached video of the ribbon cutting - I mean BRICK BREAKING ceremony done by Bertie the mascot!!! My kids are certainly looking forward to their first visit to the LEGOLAND Discovery Center Michigan, are yours?

Toledo Zoo Aquarium Grand Re-opening

On March 27, 2015, the Aquarium at the Toledo Zoo will re-open. The newly renovated Aquarium houses 3000+ aquatic animals in 178,000 gallons of water – nearly four times the volume as the previous Aquarium. Although the two and half year renovation preserved the exterior of the Works Progress Administration (WPA)-era structure, the new Aquarium experience, from sleek sharks to glittering tropical fish, is like nothing seen before in this region.

Families will now be able to touch a stingray, stand beside a sea turtle as it glides by, and talk to a diver inside The Reef. Every step leads further into the mysteries that lurk underwater, from flooded forests of the Amazon and deep seas of the Pacific to fish that glow in the dark and sea nettles that kill with a touch.

So what's new in the Toledo Zoo aquarium?

Exhibit water volume:
Old: 46,000 gallons
New: 178,000 gallons

Largest Exhibit:
Old: 7,600 gallons
New: 90,000 gallons

Percentage of marine (saltwater) exhibits:
Old: 37%
New: 87%

That's a lot of change to check out, so be sure to stop in after they re-open March 27!

Sea Life Michigan is Open!

I had the lovely opportunity last week previewing all of the creatures at Sea Life Michigan. I'll admit, three weeks ago when we visited, I wasn't sure what to expect as we were only looking down at the large aquarium. I knew that I was looking forward to visiting the touch tank though! Amazingly, my kids were looking forward to the same thing. Now everyone can have the experience as Michigan's largest aquarium, Sea Life Michigan opens at Great Lakes Crossing.

The Sea Life Michigan Aquarium (Great Lakes Crossing Outlets, 4316 Baldwin Rd.,  Auburn Hills MI 48326) opens today, January 29 for business. Hours for the aquarium are 10:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m. Weekdays and on Saturday. On Sunday's the aquarium is open 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. Ticket prices are $23.50/adults and $18.50 for youth ages 3-12, toddlers under age three receive free admission to Sea Life Michigan.

The Aquarium

My daughter and I spent nearly 2-hours inside to exhibit and would have stayed longer had the preview event not been ending. During that time we went through the entire exhibit once, then had time to go back through it a second time even. I can imagine that if there were more people in attendance, a family could easily spend 2-3 hours in the attraction. It takes time exploring, reading the information on the touch screens at each exhibit, viewing the diverse number of aquatic fish and creatures and spending quality time at the touch tank. Near the end of the exhibit there is even an area where the kids can play on a small playscape.

Conservation

I really appreciated the message that Sea Life Michigan sends to those visiting too. They have many displays available to help visitors understand that they protect species around the world with their breeding and rescue programs.  For those interested, here is what Sea Life Michigan has to say about that:
Conservation is at the heart of Sea Life's business, which operates a strategy of breed, rescue and protect. In recent years, more than 85 species in our aquariums came from our own or other breeding programs – our aim is to increase this to 135 species by 2016. All others are provided by approved suppliers who are regularly monitored and reviewed by our own experts/independent advisors.
We work hard with trusted suppliers and breeders to ensure we have animals that will amaze people. We want to educate and instill a passion in our visitors, and we choose species that will make you want to protect our oceans, not just “entertain” you.
The impact of losing species that are endangered in our oceans is phenomenal, and we must work to educate people to protect these animals. Without seeing animals and being amazed by them, we have no hope of encouraging people to protect them.
Trust us when we say the concern for the sea creatures' well being is our main priority! You can learn more about our conservation efforts here: http://www.visitsealife.com/michigan/breed_rescue_protect/

The Fish

As I mentioned above, a family could easily spend much time inside Sea Life Michigan. I really appreciated the many touch screen tablets alongside each exhibit. My daughter had a million questions about what she was seeing, certainly there was staff on hand to answer them, but there were others in attendance asking questions too, so we were able to read about what
we were seeing on the touch screens.

Want to know what kid of sea horse this is, where they live and how they care for their young? No problem. Sea Life Michigan is there with most answers your little ones will have!

There are many diverse areas throughout the aquarium too. Of course we spent a good amount of time at the touch tank seeing the horseshoe crabs,  red leg hermit crabs, turbo snails, sea stars, shrimp, slipper lobster and so much more. And that was just in the touch tank. My daughter had two favorites there, the chocolate chip sea stars and the decorator crabs!

I appreciate the Michigan aquatic area since I was able to take the time to talk about conservation as well as share some of the species of fish that we see and sometimes don't see, like the Lake Sturgeon. My daughter appreciated getting a close up view of the blue gills that she likes to catch when we go fishing!  Several of the exhibit areas had kid sized portholes, view through areas and pop up domes that allows them to get as close to the fish as possible. Viewing the world in that way helps a child develope a unique perspective on our waters and the creatures that live within. Certainly I could have crawled in with her, and perhaps I should have, but I allowed her to have her own special experience when we visited!

Moving deeper into the exhibit, families will see an are with several turtle species, coral and life living with the coral, jellyfish and they can walk through a tunnel surrounding themselves with the magic of the sea all around them. Most will appreciate Stingray Bay too as it is amazing to see them swim right up and "smile" at visitors. We were even blessed to have the moray eel pop out to say "hello" and smile for the camera.

Advice

There are many opportunities that you can take while visiting, to impart on your children the majesty of the sea. The ability to talk about our waters and conservation efforts of our waters should be front and center. Our children are one of the future generations that will inherit this earth; seeing first hand, just a few of the many species that inhabits our earth will help them to understand the greater world that they live in. Take your time to explore, slow down, sit in the tunnel, crawl into the portholes with your kids, or sit and watch in wonder as many species of fish and creatures move around you. You will not be disappointed in the experience and I'm pretty sure, that in taking your time, you will see the unexpected during your visit.

Favorites

The touch pool by far was my daughter's favorite, however she enjoyed the entire experience including taking a fun photo, and wandering the gift shop. She actually can't wait to spend some money in the shop as it wasn't open when we were there.

Of course my daughter was thrilled to once again get on television as WXYZ Channel 7 was filming a segment at Sea Life too! She's the little girl talking about the Chocolate Chip Sea Star at the touch tank. I think she's a natural. ;)

For a special experience, Sea Life Michigan would be an amazing outing for Ann Arbor families. The attraction is only a little over an hour away - Spend the day, visit the mall, have lunch at the Rainforest Cafe - It will make for an entertaining and educational day that will go down as "amazing" for your entire family!

Win Free Tickets to Sea Life Michigan

Today I was invited to preview the Sea Life Michigan Aquarium. at the Great Lakes Crossing mall. It was a big day too as it was the  arrival of several of the aquarium's sharks.

The event was a quiet one for local press, a few of my fellow bloggers, Sea Life's kid reporter and several of the Sea Life's young environmentalists. We did not get to visit the entire aquarium this wee, however my kids were thrilled to be able to attend, since they had an unexpected snow day!

The stingrays were quite happy to say "hello" at Sea Life Michigan!
I've been invited back for the media/blogger preview on January 22, so I'll have my full review at that time. However I wanted to take a moment to share some photos of today and give one lucky family a chance to win (4) free passes to Sea Life Michigan!

My kids loved seeing the many species of fish, the loved the blue tangs, the eel and the many sting rays swimming around. The sting rays even seemed happy to see us, as they swam to the edge of the aquarium waving! My daughter was especially impressed to see the puffer fish gliding past.

There were so many types of fish. We can't wait to walk through the tunnel below to see their world from another view! It was certainly beautiful, my iPhone just did not due their beauty justice!

Of course the main event of the day was the release of the sharks, specifically two varieties of sharks called a Bonnethead Shark and Blacknose Shark A third variety of shark, a Nurse Shark, was released into another enclosure elsewhere in the aquarium however we did not see that release. To see an exclusive sneak peek of the release of one of the Bonnet-head Sharks, be sure to visit the Ann Arbor Mom Facebook page.

It was a nice way to spend an unexpected day off school, that's for sure!

Sea Life Michigan Brand Ambassador

I am excited to share that I will be a Brand Ambassador for the SEA LIFE Michigan aquarium that will be opening in Auburn Hills at Great Lakes Crossing in early 2015. I know it's not an "Ann Arbor" attraction, however a 35,000-square-foot aquarium is worth driving an hour to!

SEA LIFE Michigan will be a family-friendly aquarium with a focus on interactive fun. Visit an underwater world, coming nose-to-nose with many sea creatures, like starfish, seahorses, sharks and graceful stingray. In addition to their 30 displays being planned for the launch, the centerpiece of the aquarium will be an underwater tunnel that passes beneath a tropical ocean tank.

I was excited to learn that the aquarium will offer educational talks, feeding demonstrations, field trips and an interactive touch-pool where kids can hold a crab or touch a starfish too! I can't wait to share this experience with my kids - Sit tight for more information. I should be headed to the tank filling session in a few months.

Johnny Appleseed Festival at the Wolcott Mill

I love this time of the year. The cider, the donuts, pumpkins, beautiful mums and cool crisp air. It helps me relax and really take in the colors. There are so many great festivals and events to take in too, and next weekend there is no exception!

On Sunday, September 28 at the Wolcott Mill Metropark Historic Center (65775 Wolcott Rd.,  Ray MI 48096) families can lend a hand in making cider and apple crafts, learn the apple's history from Johnny Appleseed and enjoy samples of several apple recipes.  The annual Johnny Appleseed Festival will even allow kids and adults alike to use their imagination to design and build one of five scarecrows that will decorate the Historic Center grounds for the fall too.

While it's a little bit of a drive, the weather this weekend looks like it is going to be near perfect and a nice fall drive may be the best way to explore. The cost for this fun event is just $5/child and $3/adult. For more information or to register, please call 586-749-5997.

The Adventure Park at West Bloomfield

After weeks of anticipation, I was very excited to get the opportunity to visit The Adventure Park at West Bloomfield (6600 West Maple Road, West Bloomfield) during their opening weekend. I had heard about the park when I ran across The Adventure Park at West Bloomfield Facebook Page and contacted them about bring the family along to experience time in the trees and was blessed that they gave me the invitation.

It was a great day to attend too. As one of the first nice spring days, it lent itself nicely to spending time climbing through the trees with the kids. When I first told the kids, their reaction was one of fear and anticipation, but I knew that they would change their minds once there. Ultimately as I am the leader of my intrepid crew, they really didn't have a choice in going or not going however I was pleasantly surprised that they thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

We arrived at the Adventure Park around 3:20 p.m. and met with several staff members. Before stepping onto the course though, each family member is required to sign a waiver, which took a little time. There are several iPads on hand to register everyone however we walked in behind two groups of 8, so we had a little wait to sign in.

My daughter getting properly fitted for her harness
by the Adventure Park at West Bloomfield staff
Once you sign in and purchase your tickets, the next step is to proceeded up the hill to get into the climbing gear and to pick up a pair of gloves. Again we were behind 2 small groups, so getting into our equipment took time. There are two harness sizes, which then need to be properly fitted before moving onto the orientation.

Thumbs up to the Adventure Park at West Bloomfield from my son.
His biggest complaint - "More zip-lining mom!!!"
Orientation is where you will learn about how to clip and un-clip the Tweezles (I hope that is how to spell it!) from guide wires. As a parent I really liked that my kids would be securely tethered to the trees, platforms, guide wires and ziplines. One clip on the Tweezle will not unlock until the second Tweezle clip is attached and locked. At first this process seemed a bit intimidating and confusing, but we very quickly learned how to maneuver the clips.

After orientation families are encouraged to try the small zip-line practice course - I'll admit though, the real test is going through your first course. I was amazed at how quickly my kids learned to clip and un-clip to race through the course. Even my tiny 8-year old was zipping through courses after course once she went through her first course. Her biggest challenge was that she was a bit short and unable to clip and un-clip herself to zip-lines. She is 47" tall, so if your child is shorter than that, someone will always have to be on the course to help. After twice through though my 10-year-old son took off on his own for the rest of the afternoon.

Some of you may still be confused, asking, "Yes, but what exactly IS an adventure park? The website says that it is an “aerial forest park.” I believe though, that if you close your eyes and imagine an obstacle course, suspended in and around a tree-lined forest, you may get a better visual. It's pretty simple and straightforward once you see it up close.

The Adventure Park at West Bloomfield has courses for kids older than Age 5. I would like to say though, that although parents might think the "kids courses" are just for kids, let me assure you that the Purple Courses are not to be sneered at. Parents WILL break out in a light sweat from the exertion. No, you may not be changing levels or hitting the most difficult obstacles, however considering the obstacles are designed for kids, parents will find the crawling, squatting, duck-walking or shimmying through the obstacles to be a workout in and of itself!
The Adventure Park at West Bloomfield courses were challenging enough
for kids of all ages! It was a great work-out and tons of fun for
the whole family.

Like skiing, the courses are color-coded. Each one is given a specific color to indicate how challenging the obstacles may be and how high in the trees you will get. Purple courses are the easiest, Yellow are next, then it's Green followed by Blue, and finally climbers will find Black and Double Black Diamonds.

After doing both of the yellow courses and both purple courses several times, I decided to increase the challenge and try a Green or Blue course. I was told by one of the staff members that the difference between the two was pretty significant, so I opted for Green. I am glad I did too because it was a pretty substantial challenge. Granted I was starting to feel a little muscle fatigue, but the difference in going from Yellow to Green was noticeable. The Green course took more time to complete. At one point, as I was climbing higher, I could hear my son yelling "Don't look down mom!" I wasn't frightened but will admit to taking more time to decide how to approach each obstacle as I approached it. I also didn't look as far ahead as I found I was doing on the easier courses. I took each obstacle as it came. I especially enjoyed that the Green course had 2 zip-lines that were longer than the smaller courses.

I can hear it now - Yes, but what was the cost of an outing at the Adventure Park? It is a bit more than going to a movie, but I feel that 3-hours climbing among the trees is very much like skiing or a day of golf. The cost to participate ranges from $39.00/age 7-9, $43/age 10-11 and $49 for adults and teens 15+. I was told though, that throughout the year families can find special savings, and the last 3 hours of any given day may find discounts. To take advantage of the biggest cost savings though, visitors to to the Adventure Park at West Bloomfield are encouraged to get a group together to take advantage of group rates.

Getting there: If using the address of 6600 West Maple Road, the GPS will likely direct drivers  to enter the Jewish Community Center and drive around the campus. I suggest using the entrance off Drake Road instead.

Tips: Right now there is ample space to wander for photos beneath the courses. Be sure to wear appropriate footwear though as the grounds may be muddy. For families with younger children, there is a small playground directly south of the facility. The playground and adjacent space would be great for a family picnic before or after your climbing experience.

Although we were given gloves for the day, the next time we go I may take along a better fitting pair of leather work-gloves. This would improve my grip throughout the course. Three of us wore hiking boots too, which worked really well.

I saw many ladies wearing yoga pants while on the course. I was very comfortable wearing jeans but might consider wearing other tight-fitted clothing and an athletic bra for the best support. You need to be comfortable while wearing the harness and climbing through the trees!

In all our experience was wonderful. I definitely can see us going back for another visit and would love to see what the park looks like at night or when the canopy of leaves are on the majestic oak trees on the property. Whether you are a climber or just a curios sort, a day at the Adventure park at West Bloomfield will surely be enjoyed by your entire family - young and old alike. For more information or to contact The Adventure Park at West Bloomfield call (248) 419-1550 or email them at info@westbloomfieldtrees.org

One thing I would like to add though, if you go, it's a must to yell loudly and gleefully as you ascend on the zip lines. Not enough participants were doing that and I do think that should be a rule!

We'd like to thank the Adventure Park at West Bloomfield for an exceptional family outing.
The day was loads of fun and great exercise for all!

Chasing Away Winter at Castaway Bay

Castaway Bay is a great family get-away for winter break, spring break or any time throughout the year when you just need a tropical get-away near home!
With the winter we've been having I was blessed to have another opportunity to visit Castaway Bay in Sandusky Ohio a few weeks ago. My family got to get out of the cold, catch a wave, visit with Snoopy and spend quality time together enjoying a tropical weekend getaway. Best of all, Castaway Bay just a few hours away, there was no snow and it's always tropical at Castaway Bay!

As a blogger I enjoy these trips; It's been a few years since my last time at Castaway Bay visit and I was glad to go back. Even though we've been there before, I was amazed we discovered several new things about Castaway Bay this time too.

Did you know that the parrots in the lobby sing every hour? How did we miss that the last time? Also Castaway Bay has many great activities for the kids too. That would be activities in addition to being in the waterpark. This year my kids enjoyed crafts, karaoke, and a special movie. Perhaps because my children are a few years older now, I felt more comfortable letting them run down alone to activities areas too. At our last visit it was all about the waterpark.

The other new thing I learned on this trip is that the Sandusky area has several really good wineries. I don't know why that hadn't occurred to me before since I know that areas along the lake are usually perfect for growing grapes. (Like in Michigan) Since this was a blogger get-away though, we were also offered a special wine sampling program in the evening. My husband was a bit bummed to not be included in the wine sampling, but I was able to bring a fantastic bottle of Firelands wine home for him to share.

I'll have to say, not much has changed at Castaway Bay since my last review. It's a perfect place to visit no matter the weather. The rooms were immaculate, the staff was always smiling and happy to assist you, the waterpark was kept up well, there are plenty of places to dine on good food. In short, the amenities within the resort are perfect.

My one fear was easily alleviated. As my kids are getting bigger, I wondered what their thoughts on the waterpark might be. Would they still enjoy it? Was it a big enough waterpark to give them a thrill? It's not as big as some of the other resorts, so as a parent I worried about that.

The size of the waterpark is great though. I can sit back with a book if I wanted to, and easily spot my family pretty much anywhere. That means no one gets lost and mom and dad don't have the worry. There are plenty of water slides and the wave pool to occupy the older kids too. Quite honestly my nearly 10-year-old son enjoyed the weekend as much as any of the younger kids in attendance. He loved the large water slide roller coaster the best. My daughter enjoyed the entire waterpark - as long as she could get wet! Check out what the kids had to say about Castaway Bay.

"Castaway Bay was EPIC. I loved the cool water slides and everything we did. I can't wait to go back another time." ~Zach
"My favorite part was the water park and the hot tub. I was only sad I couldn't go outside in the hot tub." ~ Gabby

A note about Gabby's comment. With the snowy and cold winter, there were icicles hanging outdoors above the hot tub making it unsafe. That's why we couldn't be outside.

As I mentioned above, I felt comfortable too allowing my kids to go down to karaoke and the movie that was playing. There certainly was a lot to do during our stay - We ate well, played, visited with the Peanuts gang and relaxed in style. I'd especially like to thank Castaway Bay for the get-away and the fun beach towel craft project for the kids. My kids now have a fun souvenir reminder of their stay. They especially appreciated the welcome basket from Lake Erie Shores & Islands too! And I of course appreciated the blogger wine tasting and bottle of wine from Firelands wine.

I highly encourage any Ann Arbor area parents to take the opportunity to head to Castaway Bay. On the way to the resort grab a bottle of Ohio wine to enjoy in your room, then let the kids loose to explore, craft, swim and play. Castaway Bay is the perfect get-away for winter break, spring break, an extended weekend or any time you want a tropical get-away within a 3 hour drive!

Thank You Castaway Bay,  Lake Erie Shores & Islands
and Firelands wine for a great blogger weekend!
